Give it some time will get get better as it breaks in.
I've got probably the heaviest 2.7 you can get. Lariat, leather, cc, sunroof, 6 1/2' bed and in pure city driving get 18-19. I'm quite happy with that.

Maybe Fords 6 speed is just as efficient as Chryslers 8 speed but the article below at least proves that the 8 speed is more efficient than their 6 speed was (Chrysler).
http://www.allpar.com/mopar/transmissions/ZF8.html
Advantages of the transmission are not so much the eight speeds, which keep the engine in its optimal range, but:
the wide range of gears, allowing for a low “performance” first gear and a high “economy” top gear;
a claimed 98% efficiency in any gear, with an unusually fast locking torque converter; and
shifts that take place faster than a person can sense them.

Short trips are the hardest on vehicles, mpg's really take a hit, especially when cold. You will burn about 1.5 - 2x the normal fuel until all your fluids get up to operating condition, so if you're short tripping, it's really hard on your vehicle. It takes approximately 20-30 mins for your fluids to reach operating temperature, depending on weather of course. Cold fluids = more resistance = more work to move the truck = more fuel burned. Take a cruise about once a week, somewhere you can set the cruise at about 70 & drive about 50 miles one way. This will help your oil do its job & keep your engine clean.

I just traded my 2014 for 2015 XLT, 302a package with 5.0L and 3.31 gears. On a trip to Charleston SC I was able to get 22.73 miles mpg. its a supercrew with 4 people and luggage in the bed. I averaged close to 75mph. I would get the V8. I had a 3.7 in my 2014 supercrew, and it was a good motor but I needed more towing ability. This 5.0l , with weight reduction, get about the same mileage as the 3.7. Maybe about .5 to 1 mpg less.

I chose the 2.7 over the 5.0 as it was a less expensive option as far as the option itself, fuel,and maintenance. I had a 5.0 mustang I traded and wanted more of a DD truck that could do it all for me, and I'm averaging about 21 combined in a very capable 2.7 v6. I've yet to road trip it extensively, but if the 5.0 is at 22 mpg (very impressive) I can only imagine the 2.7 would be slightly above 25 mpg. I loved the 5.0 sound and just knowing it's a v8, but after driving the 2.7 afterwards I was surprised how accessible the torque is at low rpms... In 90% of my scenarios (not everyone's) the 2.7 made more sense and had a very nice power delivery. I drove them back to back and was blown away by the 2.7. I was very skeptical, but after my drive, I knew the 2.7 was better for my situation as a 2wd city truck. I'm never going off-roading and will rarely tow anything... But it's nice to know the 2.7 is capable of a good bit while maintaining a very enjoyable and economical driving experience. It's quick, while being smooth and delivering instant torque.
As far as this going up against a v8, it depends on your situation. I'm a weird case of wanting the capability and space of the super crew but wanting it to be economical and fun to drive with no need for the typical "truck duty". In my case it was an Obvious choice. If I was an "off road" type or using for more heavy duty purposes the 3.5 and 5.0 would have been great choices. There's plenty of power with the 2.7 and it's quicker than the Silverado anyway while being more efficient in the process. Ford made it a tough choice until I drove it. I doubt there's a better engine/truck for my situation on the market than the 2.7

And FWIW, the 2015 Silverado 5.3 is at 17.3 and the 2015 Ram EcoDiesel is at 22.8!
