My truck is a 4x4, and I still put the 2 70 lb sand tubes in the back in the winter. Keeps the rear end planted down a bit better - in 2WD or 4WD. Also provides some grit if I should find myself needing it...

Default old tire tube

Go to any local tire shop and get an old tractor tube or any other large tub cut it in half tie one end up fill with sand then tie other end no mess can be used year after year .

Even the "heavy" 09-14 greatly benefit from weight in the rear... I wont show you pictures of what I did (a little too redneck'y, even for my taste) but it does help...
- a used tire (40lbs)
- couple big rocks inside the tire (say 100-120lbs total)
- a 4' HD steel ramp laid across on top of the tire, strapped front and back (probably another 80-100 lbs).

it will do for the next 2-3 months of winter, but I like the idea of 2 barrels filled with water (or I could just stop being cheap and get some sand bags )

^ I also like the old tube idea!

When I was much younger I can across a manhole cover, I thought it would be a great idea to use for a truck bed weight. It was around 150 lbs. I built a 2x4 frame to keep it from sliding around and center. I lost control of it on a freeway after being cut off and ended up hitting a parked tow truck head on, winching out some other person who lost control. Thankfully no was really seriously injured, but that manhole cover flung up like a coin hitting the front of the bed/Cab and shattering the rear window. I got lucky, had it not hit the truck body and hit the window just right it would of took my head clear off. Now I'm very leary of any truck bed weights at all.
