Default Should i buy extended warranty??

They're offering me the Ford Premium Care Warranty for $1,095. A 5 year 75K mile warranty.. I have a 2015 F-150 2.7L SuperCrew Lariat (2WD). Seems like a decent deal? Covers me almost 40K miles over factory warranty for a grand.. with a new/unproven engine, seems to make sense?? Bought mine in June/2015 and I have 12K miles on it.. So would cover me to June of 2020, and miles would be right at 75K miles by that time...

Thoughts?

Seems like a good deal to me... if it were 2K, i'd think harder on it... but for 1K to cover 40K additional miles past warranty - (250 bucks per 10,000 miles..) seems to be fair.

I thought the drivetrain warranty was 5 yrs/60k anyway?

I generally pass on extended warranties for two reasons:

1. I'm cheap.
2. A warranty doesn't necessarily mean they will fix it, unless there's undeniable, catastrophic failure. This comes from a guy with past experience with a knocking 5.0 under warranty and a lifter tapping, misfiring GM 5.3 under warranty.

I'm willing to bet the 2.7 and the rest of the drivetrain won't have catastrophic failure prior to 75k miles, but are you? Now if the warranty covers the electronic gizmos and you're concerned about those, I can definitely see your point there.

As a side question, I wonder how many people buy an extended warranty and wind up getting rid of the vehicle prior to reaching the end of the warranty period? Is it refundable at all?

powertrain yes is covered to 60K miles... there are tons of other components that can go out like computers, turbos etc...

yes, the warranty is pro rated... so you do get money back.. if i sold before the warranty even started (prior to factory going out) I'd get 100% back by example..

My concern is just a new engine... turbos etc... seems cheap all things considered...

Warranties are refundable if you ask for it. Also transferable for a small fee (I think like $50)

Well the power train warranty covers the engine. Does it cover the turbos? Cats? I dunno. I'm a gambler, myself lol.

It is amazing how folks will rationalize buying an extended warranty when every consumer advocacy with national credibility advises against doing so. And, most buyers seem to disregard that they're paying interest on the warranty price for the length of their finance term.
