Crew FX4 with the 6.5" bed is the granddaddy of the F150. IF I remember correctly the highway speed is close to 53?mph as tested. Generally speaking you exceed 60-65 the mileage starts to drop. 75-85 it just plain sucks. As mentioned earlier, idling, extended time warming the truck are huge mpg killers as well.

My truck is currently showing 11.6mpg. I have yet to tow a single thing. Other than the topper and bumpers, it's pretty much stock (build thread has pix), but both to kill the aerodynamics pretty badly.

It's also driven around town quite often and used as a fire department response vehicle... so the turbos are well-exercised.

Also for reference..... I have a 2017 Supercrew 4x4 w/ 3.55 rear end and running 35 x 11.5’s on 20” wheels. At 55-60 on the highway, I get 24 mpg. At 80, I get 21 mpg. Around town (not really city, but definitely not highway either), I get 15-17 mpg. Now, that being said, this is running 93 octane, always. And if I decide to have a little fun, that 15-17 will easily drop to 12-13. And if there’s snow on the pavement and I’m using 4wd..... I can drop that number even further. Now, I had a 2012 ram quad cab with a hemi that never saw better than 17 mpg on the highway, never saw better than 13 mpg city, and would get less than 10 mpg in the winter, driven the same way I drive the ford. So I guess what I am saying is that your 3.5 mileage is not what I would consider as shockingly bad. Not great, but could be a lot worse.

I'm retired and drive like an old man, i.e. accelerate slowly and drive no more than 75 mph ever even though highway speeds here in MT are 80 mph (yes, I do stay in the right lane). This pickup is my first modern Ford, before this I always drove chevy trucks and always got at least 18 mpg regardless of conditions or "variables" using the 5.3 V8. I looked at the EPA estimates and honestly thought I'd be getting at least the same gas mileage as the GM 5.3 V8. Maybe that was a stupid assumption on my part, but I wanted to buy something that was made in the USA.
I also owned a GM 5.3 V8 and similar to your experience, my 2005 Z71 crew cab Silverado would achieve 18ish if I was very very careful and stuck to 67-70mph. I don't mean to offend... just to say these trucks are not 'that' much better on the highway than anything else produced in the last 10 years, and actually worse around town if you have a really heavy foot (you do not). In my 12 month experience, to achieve the advertised mileage you have to use an incredibly light foot and avoid anything above 65 or so. Maybe the 2wd trucks are better, I don't know. But in my experience, 65ish is the hard line where mpg starts dropping for the common 4wd pickup with frontal area similar to ours, it's likely simple physics. I run some very frequent highway segments and can say that I barely cross 22 if I run state highways at 55-65, better than I recall the Silverado achieving, but on the interstate at 70, 18mpg is a challenge and that is precisely what I could achieve with the Chevy.

But the current truck offers way more capability, technology, and the additional power is pretty nice too.

I’ve also noticed that these trucks seem to swallow up a lot more gas than other vehicles I’ve had if you let them sit and warm up for a bit.

Ouch. My 5.0 4x4 157” in the 10k of mostly city driving I’ve done is getting 17.something on the lie o meter.

Winter in town 12.5mpg
Summer in town 14.5mpg
I own a 3.5 ecoboost 6.5 bed Fx4 with a full set of toolbox's mounted and loaded (about 1100 lbs)
Summers open road 18mpg
I should add I do not try to always get the best mpg ... this truck is just to much fun to drive
Also I have never figured out my mpg by pen and paper ... the lie-o-meter is good enough for me

lie o meter....lol. The computer in my truck was always off by 1.5 mpg on stock tires. Since I put on 35’s, it’s only off by .5 mpg now.

I've had 3 of the 3.5 EB F150s. 13-15 and now the 2018. They have all been close to the exact same MPGs for me except I get right at 2 MPG better on the 2018. I average almost 24 straight highway and 21-22 with mostly local rural roads some small town traffic. Winter time with more shorter trips and more around where I live with some town traffic has rarely dropped below 19 mpg. I always use a top tier fuel gas station but never over 87 Octane, I have the 36 gallon fuel tank and almost never get below 1/2 a tank. Currently have about 9500 miles, I'm retired and use my truck to pull my boat a lot. I also have a muscle car to play with so the truck is not my only vehicle I have and I've owned it since Sep 2017, so around 15 months.

I never reset my trip-2 screen so I would have my overall average for the life of my ownership of the truck. There is suppose to be a screen somewhere that showers how many miles drive with a trailer attached and could not find it but think the trailer may have to be connected, not sure. Last time I saw it was almost 30% of my total mileage if I remember correctly.

I calculated my MPGs for around 3 months to begin with on all 3 of these vehicles. Some would be anywhere from .5 to 1.2 MPG off one way and then a little off the other way. After 3 months of checking both ways and average them all out, the truck computer was only off 0.03 MPGs from me doing on a calculator. This was only about 1500 miles for me but was close enough for me. I don't live in a large city so we don't have a summer gas but we do have winter gas.
One thing I noticed, the truck would be slightly higher if I filled up at 3/4 of a tank and slightly lower when I filled up at 1/2 tank. Not every time but that was one thing I noticed.

You are getting worse now than what I get pulling my Ranger base boat which is almost 5,000 lbs. I average right around 15 mpg towing my boat. I don't know what part of the country you are in and everyone deals with winter gas I would think but for the life of me I don't know how I could even make my truck get that bad of gas mileage. I would think you would need to have it check out soon.
