Shakes and almost dies?
Hello all!
I have a 2016 XLT 4X4 with the 2.7 Ecoboost engine. Bought it about 4 to 5 months ago. And yes, my build date is in the TSB replace heads or long block assembly range
Anyway, being retired, I only have about 2600 miles on it and I notice now that with the AC on in the warmer weather, at a stop with the auto start/stop disabled, the engine at idle in drive, just sitting at a traffic light, it will act like it is missing or wanting to die. I do not see a drop in engine RPM's, however it shakes and seems like it is missing. However when I start down the road and give it some gas, it seems to run fine. Anyone else have this issue with the 2.7 engine? And so far, no engine oil usage (although I did do my first oil change at 2,000 miles), no smoke from the tailpipe, and giving it a lot of gas it pulls very strong. Going to take it to the dealership soon to have it checked. Now I am just wondering if I should of bought the coyote 5.0 instead.....
TIA for any replies,
Phil in Tennessee

My truck does the same thing. Only does it with the AC on and the transmission in drive. Pop the transmission into neutral or park and it goes away or by turning the AC off. Also notice once the transmission gets up to running temperature the issue is much less noticeable or disappears completely (at least for me). My best guess is the sudden extra load from the compressor kicking in is causing the stumble.
I've been running 87 octane but my next fill up I'll try 89 to test.
Not sure if my truck falls under the TSB since it's build date is week two of Oct 2016.

Yes, please let me know if the change in gas makes any difference. And what you describe is exactly what my truck does. Maybe I did not explain myself clearly enough.
Thanks!

Timing is super retarded running 87 in the ecoboost. Run that tank dry as you can and fill it up with 93 and give it some time to relearn and adjust the timing back to where it should be.

I'm down to 1/2 a tank so I'll fill it up today with premium (93 octane). That will calculate to around 89 octane for the mix.

87 is supposed to be fine unless you're operating in extreme conditions ... i.e. "towing". Others also have said, high heat conditions like AZ contribute.
How's your oil level?

Ugh.. How come every one of these threads I walk into I already know it's an ecoboost? And it always is.
No I haven't had any problems personally but damn. Makes me wonder if I shouldn't have kept my 5.4.

Ecoboost is a turbo motor so things will vary depending on certain things. It's not an old technology clunker motor like the 5.4 where you just put 87 octane in and go.
