Default Seat collapsed in collision

17 crewcab/6.5 was rear ended yesterday by a Toyota Matrix and everything will be fixed I'm sure but I am astounded that my passenger seat collapsed (no passenger was in when I was hit) and is now jammed under the carseat in the back seat... car is totalled and dove under rear bumper and nailed my passenger rear tire and pushed us about 20ft. Damage isn't that bad to the truck when all is considered, new bumper/hitch/exhaust/frame horn for hitch mount, but I'm really questioning the safety for my pregnant wife and daughter. Will be going to a car seat with the rear crash bar now so the seat can't flip up like this one did but right after the accident the base was about 6" off the seat cushion, looks like it is settling in on the foam now and sinking back in but the passenger seat is still frozen and non-responsive to all controls.

I would not think this is normal at all and frankly do not really want my little girl back there in the truck when I do get it back. Has anyone else experienced this? what should I be talking to with the dealership when it goes in to be fixed regarding the seat fix? The adjuster from TD will be around this week as Universal ford in Calgary is not a 'preferred' shop but I would rather keep it at a ford facility for repair as Universal has their body shop in house.

Thanks in advance!!!

I'd say with some confidence that that's a defective passenger seat. I was rear-ended in my '16 SCab and neither front seat budged the slightest bit. Neither did the seats in my '12 when it was totaled.
I'm not sure exactly what you'd look for in the seat to find the defect either before or after a crash. Maybe somebody who's been into their seats will chime in with some ideas.

Tough luck, by the way. I hope nobody was hurt.

Yeah, something is wrong with that seat, however, you really should put the child seat in the middle, exactly for this reason. If you got T-boned in the passenger side, then there would be glass in that seat, so do yourself and your wife a favor and move it to the middle, there are LATCH attachments there for it. A little inconvenience is well worth the extra safety for the little one. Been there, done that.

If you find those center latch points I'd love to see them.

Here you go, behind the center head rest

Passenger side

Drivers side

The F150 Screw has 3 child seat positions so 3 seats can be installed.

Wish I had these in my F350, it had no LATCH back there.

Was it a power seat or manual?
I hope you contact Ford and not just the dealership. Have them come get the seat. Please update us too.

If your dealer doesn't immediately contact Ford, contact them yourself. Defective, needs full replacement at Ford's cost.

Agreed, I would go above the dealer and go straight to Ford corporate.

A few observations, albeit not necessarily new ones:
1) My kid's seat is in the middle of the rear bench. It's the safest place for a kid.
2) The rear-facing seat position is safest, but is required for a relatively short period of time. When it's time to go front-facing, the exposure to a similar failure will be different... there will be more clearance, but maybe a higher chance of direct contract from a collapsed seat back.
3) Skip the dealer and go directly to Ford for best results. I would think the corporation should respond swiftly to such a glaring safety issue. The seat was unoccupied; was there anything at all in the seat? There's a sensor in the seat that detects the presence of a passenger, and it might get logged in an accident.

The insurance adjuster comes out Monday I believe and then the truck is off to ford for repairs as ford is not part of the 'partnership network' that TD insurance has but I will double check on the seat with the dealer to see what is up.

Seat is a power adjustable one but was unoccupied and nothing was on the seat either when the accident happened. As to the middle position it is good except when we need extra cab space with the dog so seat moves back and forth but have never had an issue before but we do have friends with an identical truck that have 3 car seats in the back (2 rear facing 1 booster) that are definitely interested in this as well so will see what ford says when they get around to the truck.
