The Season is Upon Us! What have you guys used for winter tires
 

Looking for everyone's input on what experience have you had with your winter tires. I plan on using my 20 inch OEM wheels for the winter. Hoping to get summer wheel candy for after the wretched Canadian winter. Anyway, if you guys don't mind sharing what type of winter tire you use; why you like it; why don't like it; what conditions do you typically encounter in your neck of the woods. Also how does it compare on wet and dry conditions.

I live in the suburbs in Ontario, Canada. I mostly drive city streets, highway, and some rural roads. It would be nice if people share their experience with weights in the back. Home made vs. the products out there. I personally find my stock Hankooks to be fine in the dry, but driving in the wet is a dangerous, and the grip is not very good. The truck definitely needs to be balanced out with some added weight in the back

For bed weight, go buy 3-4 burlap sacks and fill up with sand and throw them in the bed. Plus when you start losing traction you can use some of the sand for traction

Good Year Duratrac here in the Cleveland OH area. Have them on my wife's Jeep and on my F150. Best winter summer tire I have found.

I had some Pathfinder Sport SAT from discount tire on my Silverado, they're made by Kuhmo for Discount Tire. They have great traed life and did fairly well in the snow/mud/sand, and there was no howl or extra noise on the highway. Not sure if Discount Tire is up there in Canada, but the tires are worth a look. A full set cost me around $640.

I'm running Firestone Winterforce LTs on 18" Lariat wheels here in central New Hampshire. (Current truck is '15 Platinum.) Once the regular snowfalls begin, side roads here are never plowed clean- they maintain a layer of packed snow and sand for the season.

The Winterforce LTs are pretty good, but I wouldn't say they're great. I'd like them to have better grip in deep snow. On dry roads, they have good traction but don't track as precisely as my all-season tires. I only run them from late November to March.

I don't put any weight in the bed and use 4H on snow-packed side roads.

For the extra $25 USD per tire, I'll go with the Blizzaks over the Winterforce LTs next time around.

That's a pretty good idea. I was thinking using some of my workout plates, but they slide all over the place, even with the Line-X coating. Thank you.

I had a set of Toyo winters on my Ram 1500, and I was pretty happy with them, especially in the dry. Kumho will be added to my list of tires to look at. I would have to go south of the border to get the Pathfinders, which will make the taxman very unhappy. They screw you royally for betraying your local businesses. It's hard with how much cheaper certain items can be in the US. Thank you for your input

I am going to have to dig a little further for these. I couldn't find them in the local shops in the proper size for my truck. Thank you for the suggestion. BTW do you run those on your OEM wheels? What size?

I have been running Yokohama IG51V, 275/55-20 on my 16 Lariat 157 3.5 eco for the last 2 winters. Excellent tires in my experience, way better than blizzaks I have used in the past. I live in the mountains @6500' in lake tahoe so last year they got well used! Bear in mind of course I am talking west coast conditions with much lower humidity than the ice coast.

Have ridden out several years of winters (snow & ice) here at 5,500ft and frankly I am impressed with the OEM Hankook tires on my Platinum. I looked into changing them out when I first bought the vehicle (e.g. Michelins) and after research decided NOT to change them. Noise is low and the ride is pretty remarkable.... rain.... no problem.

I am glad I stayed with them! I now have 28K miles on the Platinum and the tread depth all around is 8/32.... lots of life left! During snow/ice the Hankooks performed perfectly... getting me up an inclined paver driveway filled with snow and ice. Dropped it into 4x4 Low and up I go.... only one time did I engage the locking rear to avoid swerving ..... straight up and away!!

That is my story and I am sticking with it!!! AZPLAT:thumbup:
