Default School me on used truck shopping..

I'm currently driving a '13 Tacoma, great little truck. No real reason to get rid of it, other than the fact that my son really needs a truck for his work. Thus, I'm starting to look at AutoTrader and the F150 caught my eye. Most of the ones I'm seeing are with the 10 speed and 2.7 EB. I'm certain that I want the SuperCrew, and would prefer (but not a dealbreaker) the vinyl flooring (dirtbike rider, blue collar worker, easy to clean). I frequently tow a utility trailer with about 2k pounds of stuff in it, also often haul raw materials for the shop (I own and operate a machine shop). The Taco did all of that with no issue, save for the small bed capacity. Has Ford worked out the kinks in this engine/tranny combo? What should I be looking for when I visit the dealers?
Here's one example of truck I'd like to look at: 2019 F150
And another: 2018 F150

1 thing i can attest to.... get the one without navigation. When it decides to not function properly... it affects the radio, screen, button response. The 17" rims as opposed to the 18" have a higher load capacity rating.

Either will be good trucks. Buy the one that makes you happy, seriously. The 2.7 is a great little engine, better than my 3.5.

Ultimately..... yes buy what makes you happy... I whole hearty agree with that statement.

My old mans truck (which i inherited) started having issues that would have it sitting for a few weeks. So I traded it in.
Prior to what i have now I had a 2018 xlt 2.7 4x4 with the 5.5 bed, it was a good truck but after a few weeks, I wasnt happy. Then I saw a truck with the longer bed.... I looked at a few, some were bare bones xlts, 1 with high mileage and for the price I passed on it. The one I have now is a 2018 xlt and has more options then what I was looking for with the exception of the nav. The color was something I wasnt to fond of but its grown on me, that and people complimenting. Ive been wanting the 3.5, I should have stuck to my guns before getting the 2.7. Live and learn.

While I understand your desire for vinyl flooring, I wouldn't get too hung up on that as it will severely limit your options. Consider WeatherTech or Husky front and rear floor liners.

Check Car Fax reports and really get into the weeds with the maintenance history. Both of the vehicles you posted links to seemed to have decent histories with nothing alarming other than the freezing door lock issues, which is pretty normal, but nonetheless aggravating. Keep in mind, the one truck is already past the 36 months/36,000 mile basic warranty period and the other is getting close.

You'll like the Super Crew. I'm on my second one and even though it's rare when anyone sits back there, it's nice to have the space for my work and hunting gear that I feel more comfortable leaving in the cab rather than in the bed/cap.

The 2019 is designated as a STX (a tarted up XL). My 2018 STX has a center console (which I thought was standard), but I see the middle seat in this 2019 shown. Maybe you could get it either way or there was a change to the STX or its packages in 2019, I don't know. It looks like the most obvious exterior queue differences are the grille and wheels. Big fan of the STX grille. I also like the larger 8" screen in the 2019 STX. I have the 2.7/10spd and if I had to do it all over again, I would purchase the 2.7/10spd. If you spend anytime on this site, you'll see less overall complaints about that combination versus the others. Has someone gotten a bad 2.7? Yeah, they have and I seem to recall those were early in the run. Now, having said that, this is a small sampling of owners and YMMV...but I doubt it. I think you'll be happy either way as long as they check out. I'm happy with my 2018 STX.

I would not focus on a full vinyl floor... Husky liners can take care of that.

The XL is bare bones... XLT would be nice for a few more creature comforts.

2.7 and 10 speed is a great combo. I would have taken either motor but a 3.5 came up first. 2018 and up is the 2nd gen 2.7 with a few good changes so I would shoot for that. The first gen 2.7 is also very reliable though.

2.7 XLT can’t go wrong. Lower mileage the better of course

It's a good performing and reliable drivetrain, though the transmission, like so many modern ones, can be clunky and annoying at times. It will handily outperform your Tacoma and probably return the same or better gas mileage if you drive it reasonably. It is not built to the same quality standards, though. That's not to say F-150s are unreliable but if you want to be happy you need to accept that going in. Every truck will have pros and cons.

The freezing door latches are indeed an aggravation that Ford never did properly fix, and I see you are in Maine. That's something to consider, there's a sticky here about that.

I really enjoy my 2.7 with the 6 speed. The 10 speed I drove was not as smooth. I had the frozen door latches on both front doors last winter. Had the TSB preformed for free and it solved the issue. Not a single issue in Jan a feb on the coldest mornings.
