In Georgia, you pay a Title Ad Valorem Tax at time of purchase. Lower rate than sales tax. After that, $18/year for plates no matter of the value of the vehicle.

In Maine, you pay 5.5% sales tax on the price of the truck minus your trade-in. Then you pay an excise tax every year when you register it for "the privilege of operating a motor vehicle or camper trailer on the public ways". The tax is based on MSRP, not what you actually paid. It goes down every year until the 6th year, then it stays the same. My 48,000 (msrp) truck cost about $1200 the first year, $850 the second year and will eventually get down to $200 a year to register.
