Texas subtracts the trade in value from the price then charges tax in the remainder.

So are you saying that TN takes $1,000 off the top of your sales tax or do they calculate the tax saving based on the sales price minus trade-in?

South Carolina only charges $300. Or did before the stupid politicians recently upped that to $600. Seems cheap, right? Well then the county nails you every year with property taxes. Mine were $740 last year on my $46000 truck. It'll go down maybe $20 next year.

I purchased my 2017 F150 at Golden Circle Ford in Bolivar, TN at the end of March ( I live in TN) you are taxed on the difference. I traded in a 2010 f150, and with rebates (1500 I think) I was only taxed on the difference which was around 37000. Ok so I just looked at my paperwork the rebate of 1250 was taken off after tax was figured so I did have to pay taxes on the rebate.

With no sales tax issues whatsoever, I feel so fortunate to reside in awesome Oregon.

You pay it in the form of a state income tax, so you pay whether you buy or not! 9.9% +/_ I dont pay until I buy, Great State Texas! 6.25% tax, then write it off on federal taxes.

North Carolina charges you 3 percent of the purchase price minus the trade-in credit... Then like @BabyboostFX4 said each year the county hits us again for property taxes, and they make sure they get it by combining it with your tag renewal fee...if don't pay your taxes you can't renew your tags!

Edit:The pencil pushers in Raleigh call it a Highway Use Tax instead of a state sales tax. The tax is assessed each time a title is transferred.

This is correct ^^^for Tennessee. I'm a hour east of you and when I bought mine last March I even called the Department of Revenue myself to ask about being taxed on my rebates.

This. Every state is different. Which makes writing dealership software a pain in the rump!
