Default What MPG are you getting towing

I Have 2016 Ford F150 Super Crew with 3.5 eco boost 4x4. With a 110000 miles. Use to get 18 to 21mpg but at 100000 miles my Ford dealer said I need a tune-up now I get 16 to 18mpg

I tow a 20ft Ranger bass boat and I get 13 – 15 mpg. But when I Hook up to my 7x16 Enclosed Trailer with my Zero turn and my 400 Yamaha ATV and miscellaneous Carpenter Tools inside. The best I get is in the 6 mpg range. So over this past weekend I did a test. I got on the highway put the cruse on 65mph hit the tow/haul and reset the MPG. At 36.1 mile I was getting 6.7 at 2100rpms and spent most of the time in 5th gear with lots of down shifts into 4th gear. So I tried it same way at 70mph and got 6.4mpg at 32.7 miles and 2600rpms. And probably 50/50 between 5th and 4th gear. And I also always level the trailer. And this was driving north right up the middle of Illinois so flat ground and 8mph wind out of the south. My question is would the 5.0 tow better? What kind of numbers are you guys getting with similar loads? My 2004 E350 Cargo Van with a 5.4 gets 10.5 with same trailer.

Tow better is hard to answer. I had the 5.0 and it got better MPG then the Eco boost when towing a camper (around 9-10) , but the Eco boost hands down pulled stronger based on a neighbors. The 5.0 should engine brake better downhill. There's probably 10 other different characteristics.

2017 with the 3.5 EB - getting 19-20mpg according to the computer normally, any 16-18mpg pulling an 1875 Lund Pro-Guide. Maybe the 10 speed makes all the difference? I also have a cap - I don't know if that helps keep the air flowing better over the boat.

Generally I get between 9 to 12mpg pulling my 20ft Micro-Lite (depending on wind/hills/flat) with my 5.0. I'll get 21mpg on the highway not towing. I'm pretty easy on the go pedal though towing at around 60mph. The numbers you posted for your 2016 3.5EB don't seem right to me. Normally I would think that your mpg numbers would be similar to mine, if not even a little better while not towing.

I bought my truck used and wasn’t planning on towing heavy. I ended up with a 2015 5.0 with a 3.31 rear end - I know, a dog of a performer. For my use, it is just fine - when I do tow, it is usually just a 6X12 landscaping trailer with maybe 1500 lbs in it - easy tow. I recently rented a 6x12 enclosed u-haul trailer and loaded it up pretty good. The truck couldn’t get out of its own way - locked out 6th gear to prevent constant downshifting. Even with this load, which still wasn’t that heavy, I managed around 15mpg.

so the moral of this story is don’t ever get a 5.0 with a 3.31 if you plan to tow heavy and the 5.0 does get decent mpg while towing.

with the 10 speed and the 3.31 rear end my 5.0 tows my 23 foot airstream fine, even in the hills. Get around 11 to 12 mpg as measured at the pump.

I have a 2015 5.0 scab 4x4 with 3.55 axles. Not towing, I get around 20 at a steady 65mph. Towing my enclosed snowmobile trailer (8.5ft wide x 12ft long) drops my mileage down to about 11-12 at the same speed. I use tow/haul mode and it stays in 6th (on the flat). The trailer is not very heavy, but it has a lot of drag at speed.

I towed a 6x12 enclosed Uhaul mostly flat land stuffed load and truck bed. I got 15 to 16 on my f150 crew cab 2.7 3.31 rear.
