Question Receiver-mounted carrier

I got my wife a scooter, as she can't walk very far. Have been considering a receiver-mounted carrier for it. It weighs around 115 lbs. Anyone here have any experience with carrying one of these on that type of rear carrier? We're planning a cross-country trip in our F150 (description at bottom) - is it safe? Does it affect the handling to any great extent? Any preferred brand of carrier (needs to have a ramp)? Thanks!

While not the same setup you describe i use a hitch mounted hauler for my 260 lbs dirtbike. I drive from denver to santa fe with it at least 1-2 times a year in all weather conditions and have had no handling issues.

All of the weight is really far back, which isn't good. I have no idea of scooter weights, but as long as it plus the carrier is under 500 lbs, it should be within spec. You also have the 3.5 and Max tow, so it's the stronger hitch. I see those things on much less capable vehicles, so I'd expect it would be fine. From a weight distribution standpoint it'd be better off in the bed, but as long as you try to put other cargo weight closer to the front as is practical i wouldn't think it would be an issue.

I would imagine this would be perfect for you: https://m.harborfreight.com/aluminum-mobility-wheelchair-and-scooter-carrier-67599.html

I see these mobility scooters on the back of minivans all day every day in the DFW area.
They have smaller hitches and significantly lower towing/hauling capacity.

I can assure you that your F150 with Eco and Max tow will handle that carrier and scooter weight without issue.
Auto Anything has a nice one that will probably fit your needs.

Good luck on your trip and be safe.....

With a cargo carrier on the hitch and your truck you will be fine. E-Trailer has a few options to compare. Get yourself hooked up and enjoy your trip! https://www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Hit...th_Ramp.aspx#/

I have two of those carriers. I have hauled a mobility chair a time or two and a snowblower many times with a compact truck. It will be no sweat for a fullsize.

Harbor Freight has a nice aluminum one with a ramp.

Get one of these though.
Amazon Amazon
The tubes are not very tight and the deck tends to wobble a bit, this will lock it in place and prevent bouncing when you go down the road, which eventually the noise will drive you insane.

Thanks! I never thought of that possibility! \
