Received bill in mail from dealer for underestimated DMV fees?
 

2 1/2 months after purchasing my nearly $60K truck, I received an invoice in the mail by my dealership. Apparently they underestimated the DMV fees by $42, and now they want me to pay it. They enclosed copies of the bill of sale, and copy of my registration to show the $42 difference.
My question is am I obligated to pay it? As far as I know, the sale was final, and they put down the DMV fee on the bill of sale, I don't think its my fault they screwed up.
I'm actually surprised they caught this error, and instead of saying to themselves "lets just eat it", they want me to pay for it.

Is it registered yet? The dealership may have paid it for you, in which case I would say you don't owe anybody anything. If they didn't, you owe the DMV, not the dealership. I'd send the difference to the DMV but not to the dealership. I would think the DMV would come to you instead of the dealership for a balance due.

Bill of sale should have verbiage on it, perhaps on back, as to your obligations.

Yes, you owe the fees IMO.

I got a check back twice, when the dealership OVERESTIMATED the MVC fees. I never considered returning it to the dealership. Mistakes get made..

If your paperwork was like mine, yes, you owe the money. The dealer makes a a best guess estimate and being $42 off isn't that big a deal.

Yep. You owe it. The dealership can only estimate and waits for the State to finalize the fees.

This is not a dealership failing to help, they offered their best guess. But you are ultimately responsible.

I would rather have it work this way than be required to go stand in long lines to pay the first set of fess at the DMV...

The truck was registered and plated same day I purchased it ( I live in NY). The dealer put a temp registration on the window, and I got the permanent one from DMV in the mail a week later.

I have no idea what my obligations are, I have not read the final bill of sale fine print yet. But the whole thing seems weird over 2 months later. I have purchased new cars before, never had this issue.

Check your paperwork, but odds are it is the same in most places - you need to pay it.

Most places have some verbiage in the paperwork that you agree to minor corrections, including cost, if need be, in order to get the sale done. In this case, they made their best guess and were off by less than $50. It happens...

Whats the worst that happens if he doesn't pay them the $50? The truck is already titled, and he has a complete bill of sale.

It's only $42 on a $60,000 truck. IMO, from an ethical standpoint you owe the $42...just pay it and move on. Only $42 to keep your integrity intact...priceless!
