Default Rear end (3.31 vs 3.55)

I’m looking to purchase a new (2015 or 2016) Lariat Sport502A w/ moonroof but the only trucks available in my area have the 3.31 rearend. My current truck has 3.55s and itfeels good with 33” tires.I plan tolevel and install 285/60/20 Duratracs and I’m afraid the 3.31s will make thetruck seem slow.I’m almost set on the5.0 but would consider the 3.5EB as I’m limited on available trucks.

No plans to tow but I would describe my driving style as “sporty”and would hate it if the truck felt sluggish.

If I want the 3.55s it looks like I’ll have to order and itwould take up to 12 weeks for delivery. If I had to order I would probably go with the 3.73

I've searched the forum and read a lot of posts on rear end gearing, but I'd additional opinions and experiences.

Either engine will still smoke the tires with the 3.31. The only difference you would actually notice is if you were towing heavy. Don't believe me? Go drive both. No way you truly feel the difference. Still don't believe me. Google the 0-60 times. And see what you can find. When you see their similar you'll know it.

If you are set on getting the 5.0 and adding level and bigger tires I'd get 3.73 gears if I was ordering a truck

You should drive both so there are no surprises. You asked for opinions and experiences so her it goes... I ordered the 5.0/3.73 and couldn't be happier. My previous truck was a 2013 Ram with the Hemi and 3.55s. I road tested a Hemi with 3.91s before I bought my Ram, and I have to admit I was disappointed with the 3.55s. I drove an F150 with the 5.0/3.31 and there is a noticeable difference between them and the 3.73s. I love low gears, makes the truck move effortlessly. Haven't driven a 5.0/3.55 equipped truck, but I can say the 5.0/3.73 seems like the perfect combo. I would try to road test every option so you don't wish you had later. That being said, the 3.5EB will probably handle taller gears easier, with all the low end torque it makes

I have had both the 5.0 and 3.5 eb with 3.55 gears and you're correct that the 3.5eb handles taller tires better but it's noticeable in fuel mileage also. The 5.0 was 2mpg better before and after adding bigger tires. The eb still pulls hard with bigger tires though. I'd be happy with 3.73 now with the eb

my 14 had 6 inch lift and 35s on 20"s with 3.73. zero problems smoking the tires with the 5.0

my 15 same 6 inch lift, same wheels and tires 3.55 gears 5.0 i cannot do a burnout period. lol

3.55 is weak sauce

order a 5.0 with 3.73 , and love the **** out of it. i miss my 14 lol

There must be something else going on then. Less than a 5% difference in the axle ratio isn't going to effect power in 1st gear much if at all when doing burnouts.

seeing as he is stock and not towing seems to me my statement stands. You have different needs with lift and 35s.

I agree. I wonder how much has to do with the weight difference ("mass at rest..."). The 15 might just go while the 14 wants to sit there. Likely a combination of the weight/gearing.

ehhhhhh....

I test drove a 5.0L back to back with a 3.31, and 3.73. The 3.31 was so sluggish. I immediately noticed a difference. How you wouldn't notice a difference between 3.31 and 3.73 is beyond me.
