Question on the broken torque converters. Was it just regular wear and tear that made them go? How did they break? I'm assuming because you didn't say you replaced the transmission as well that the TC's did not spread junk through the system when they went out.

Turbos are the first to go, typically. Happy to hear they can actually last over 200K miles. Also surprised a more stressed 2.7 on a big truck can last that long without major issues... and with 10K oil changes. But at that mileage, it probably included lots of highway/freeway. But I'd never do 10K on my truck with lots of short trips and 100+ temperatures with only 6 quarts of oil. Hopefully this case is not an anomaly, and all EB engines can last that long too .

Yeah I'm very curious on the torque converter thing - especially since that's the ZF transmission system (I believe).

As far as the rest of the engine since you do so much highway driving I'm not surprised by any of the rest of it. motorcraft oil is fine for most driving - I would argue other than actually towning the F150 engine isn't stressed much due to the gearing.

When you are on the highway what is your nominal speed?

is your truck 4 years old by build date?

Dang! And I thought mine had a crap load of miles. I bought my 2015 XLT, 5.0, used 2 months ago with 146550 on the clock!

But I think if my truck holds up for the next 170k miles as it has for the last 30k, another F150 will be close to the top of my list.
Actually I have 2 EB, and I am on the fence about them coking the valves, if the OP just changes spark plugs and oil with no mods, I would love to see how its working for him.

Still would like to see evidence/story/link on a 2.7 that had "coked" up the intake valves.

I know that engines with Direct fuel injection ala 3.5 liter EcoBoost can have coking of the intake valve due to oil vapors being introduced to the intake stream upstream of the valves by the PCV system. In a normal Port fuel injected engine the incoming air fuel mixture cleans the intake valve of oil deposits prevent the coking of the valve. Direct injection engines do not have the ability to clean the valves since it is only air passing over them as the fuel is injected directly into the cylinder.

So, you've seen nothing about coking 2.7's either. I understand the technology.

I think the newer oil formulas play a rather large role in preventing the coked valves these days. the 2.7LEB has been on the street since these oils have been on the market. Does it mean it doesn't coke over, or does it mean it takes significantly longer to do so.

I've not seen or heard of many 2.7L tear downs that have any significant time on them to prove either way either. I think time will tell.
