PSA: Updating your Nav Maps can take a LONG time

I updated my maps and Sync software from a USB drive and it took 27 minutes from start to finish. I was surprised as I figured I would have to cancel the auto idle timeout at least once but it finished before that point.

I am pretty sure mine stopped 1/2 way through and picked up where it left off when I re-started the vehicle (sync 3 map update). I left it running in the driveway after starting the update and came out 30 minutes later the truck had shut itself off.

I added a module to mine and can run Android Auto or Apple Car Play. My maps are always up to date.

I used a fairly new 3rd party application that creates the update software package and formats a USB drive for you. Located here: https://cyanlabs.net/applications/syn3-updater/ There are several YT video tutorials out as well.

It does require engine running.
I've installed the sync 3.4 ver build 222000. Now I'm doing my map Nav free update. The directions did state that vehicle must be switched on. It doesn't say it must be running. Only suggests it- because update takes so long it could kill battery. It says 60 minutes. That's a joke been almost 90 already. Still waiting..
Still running!!!!
Still running!!!!

I don't think I'd risk having the truck "on" and engine not running for that long, as I'm guessing if your battery died in the middle of the map update you might have trouble trying to complete the update again.
If I didn't want the engine running for that long, I'd at least hook up a charger to the battery during the update.
Kind of a pain but still way better than a trip to the dealer!

Mine took 2 hrs. I waited until a road trip to do mine, not like the update was much of anything important, lol.
