Basically what you are experiencing is the "float" of the clutch mechanism between states of engagement and disengagement when coasting and letting off the gas and then when accelerating, the clutch snaps back in.

Not to be confused with drive-line lash clunk from a low speed stop/drive.

Not to hijack the thread but I have question and YOU sound like you know the answer.
What's the deal with shifting (specifically, DOWN SHIFTING) on the fly? I've been doing it, but endeavor to keep 'er at or under 2k. Does it damage the tranny?

Thanks!

I'm not say this is true in all cases but the thumps, squeaks, bumps and rattles are usually caused by modifications. These new Ford trucks are generally pretty quiet outside of a little road noise depending on the model you have.

Sorry, I am not the expert on all things transmission, just more informed on the topic started by the OP.

My F150 does it. So does my Tundra. Sometimes the clunk is subtle. Other times it feels like you bottomed out.

Same thing on my 2016 5.0 4X4 SCrew. It's done it since new and now has 10,000 miles in it.

Separate from this issue, I also had the driveshaft slip bump, but cleaned and re-greased it with the Motorcraft XG-8 PTFE grease. Seems to have minimized it.

My 2014 Crew Cab with 6.5 Bed 4x4 has experienced a clunk feeling every time I come to a stop or start. I have been to 5 Ford Dealerships. It seems Ford knows of this problem because there is a TSB on it and they describe it as a "Slip-Bump". The only answer they seem to have to to grease the slip yoke which works for less than 1 gas tank. They even replaced the drive-shaft and it still did not fix the problem. They are now calling it normal. I bought this truck new and added after-market leather, bed liner, and a bed cover and I am extremely unhappy with my purchase because of the slip bump that I feel every time I stop and start but I am so deep into it I will lose money if I sell it or trade it. It is so obvious, that my passengers question it when they feel it. I am baffled as to why Ford has decided to call this "normal". I will buy a lot of vehicles in the future but I can't in good conscience buy another Ford. I feel cheated as I have been unhappy for 40,000 miles...and I have wasted endless time and money on repairs and rental cars. Boo Ford!

Default Mine too

2015 Super Crew 4x4 3.5 eco. Mine has the clunk since new. Most noticeable above 50mph on a hilly or winding where I am on and off the throttle. It drives me crazy. I noticed it is worse with higher transmission temperature. Dealer doesn't know but says it is probably the torque converter clutch and no fix. Ford should find a fix for this annoying problem.

Mine too. But there are many threads and posts on this as being normal.

Hey, I recently started a thread called Drive Train Slop. There is more info about this problem there, although no definitive answers. But some interesting ideas.
