Phone Charging Problems

On a recent trip my wife plugged her I-phone 6 into the USB to charge it, and despite the phone showing charge it actually deceased the battery level. She tried it on the 12 volt plug and the same thing. Last night we had a power outage at home so I plugged mine in on the way to work, and had the same problem. After 1/2 hour, it went from 37% to 34%. Anyone else have this problem, or have any idea what might be going on? Apple Carplay works, so the USB is communicating.

It's charging at normal USB rates, not high-power/high-speed rates, so if you're using battery-intensive services (e.g. GPS or streaming music) while using the phone, the net result is a power loss.

If you want to charge faster, use a better charger in the 12V port rather than the built-in USB hub.

Very well could be your plug. Buy a new one to test if you've exhausted all other options.

possible bad charging cord?

Cord can't be bad since it communicates - sync works... The only thing I could see is that you're demanding a lot to your phone (GPS, streaming, etc.) and the power of the USB cord isn't enough to compensate.

First of all, do you see the charging icon on your phone next to the battery status when you plug it? Secondly, did you try 1) the other few USB plugs in the truck 2) another charging wire and 3) using the 12V port or the 110v AC outlet?

Ive seen charge wires do stuff like that. Just to eliminate it 100% try another cord

The provided USB ports charge at a much lower rate than a Quick Charge 2.0 or 3.0 12v adapters. Sucks, because I figure you want to remain connected with Carplay, but its not keeping up with your phones power needs.

Also, if you are using aftermarket Apple Lightning cords, they don't always play nice with your Iphone. I would make sure the cord you use is either an Apple branded or MiFi certified.

Turns out it was a cheap no-name Chinese cable and plug. It did work in my wife’s Escape but that is Sync, not Sync 3 so probably much less drain. Next time I’ll try the Apple cable and plug and see if it’s better.
