Wow. They must have had serious issues at the plant to be down for that long.

Correct, the gasifiers which were down were the GTL base oil ones, used for the FULL synthetic products (Ultra & Reg Platinum). They have started manufacturing there again, but it's refined (additives) and bottled in Houston, so it will still take a bit to see it back on retail shelves. I can't give you a date, but sooner than later.

That Qatar plant was the first large scale gtl plant. There always seems to be unforeseen problems on new units, let alone new plants first of their kind. With the changes in global markets, i'm not sure we will ever see another one like it.

Is Pennzoil Platinum/Ultra the only oil made from natural gas?

Default Additive fallout?

In April I purchased 8 qts (1 qt bottles) of Penn Ultra Platinum from Walmart online. Just recently used the oil for an oil change in one of my trucks, and what I saw in the bottom of the plastic bottle was disturbing. It looked like dark, dirty contamination or?? I called Shell (they own Penn) and told them about it, and they were going to check the batch for quality etc., and they said I would get a call back in 2 weeks. Didn't hear back and it's been almost 3 weeks. I made two calls to tech support and got two different answers. First guy called it "additive fallout" and shaking the bottle would have helped. Second guy said that it's not additive fallout, but something to do will a molecule in the oil. It so sure that I'm going to ever use this oil again, but I am going to drain it out and send a sample to Blackstone Labs for analysis. We will see whether it's anything to really be concerned about.
Anyone else seen this? If you use the Ultra, shake it up before pouring.

I'm sure it's fine since it's api sn, but I prefer mainstream brands like pennzoil since they have a much larger budget for r&d. Also, the gtl base oil is a game changer in the lube oil industry. It's better than regular group 3 and even group 4 in many ways.

There is a video on Youtube of that royal purple, it does not do well in cold climates, during a synthetic oil comparison. Warm weather is fine, but more like molases if you live in wintery states.

Just a consideration.

Exclamation

I recently bought the 5qt jugs and my date stamp was November 2016.

The 1qt bottles were May 23, 2017.

your post is not the first mention of the stuff in the bottom. I haven't heard anyone draining it out just because of that.

I'm scratching my head trying to understand what you wrote in the red.....
