panoramic sunroof heats up the cab in the summer
#21
Hey all. I have a new 2016 F150 with the panoramic sunroof option. I noticed as the weather is heating up here (Charleston, SC), that the AC has a hard time keeping the cabin cool. I retracted the liner and noticed that the glass gets so hot from the sun, that it almost burns your hand. Add in that the liner is a thin fabric with no insulation properties, it seems that the heat being generated exceeds the ability of the AC to keep the cabin cool.
I am just curious if anybody else has noticed this and if so, were you able to resolve the issue? Thanks.

I've had this same issue in other cars with a sunroof. Here in Central Florida it gets plenty hot during the summer. Plus we get afternoon rains. Tint place told me that thermal shock (going from baking in the Florida sun to getting hit by rain) will crack them.
He explained it the same way as I3rian, sunlight going through the glass twice and because it is dark, it tends to absorb it. I think covering it with a vinyl or even painting it (on the outside, of course) might be the best way to go.

I know a normal tint would still add heat to the glass if applied to the outside. I was thinking more of a reflective or mirror tint to stop the light before it would enter the glass to begin with. Maybe a "chrome" vinyl wrap or something that could be put on in the summer then removed when it cools back down. Would be an expensive fix added to an expensive option that sounds like the OP should have unchecked.

Old Fart
I just did my pano, windshield and front passenger windows last weekend. 50 ceramic on the pano and windshield and matched the fronts to the rear passenger.
I have done this on the last four vehicles that I have owned, no cracks on any of them them.
But on the other hand I don't live in the heat belt, I live in Washington state.

You want the lightest color so the least amount is reflected back thru the glass
I've been in 100 heat, sunlight bearing down, interior cooled to 68 and then a flash downpour with no cracks on any of my moon roofs
I do always keep the interior shade open though, no scientific proof, but I feel it's better than trapping all that heat in the inch between the shade and roof

One would think that Ford has to be aware of this. I have a service appointment next week to resolve this issue. That Ford would not use a solar/heat reflective tint on their sunroof is astounding. I have always had sunroofs on my vehicles and this is the first time this issue has been noted. In my opinion, the retractable liner should have had some thermal properties (like every other sunroof I have owned). But for sure, it will be interesting to see how Ford service will address this issue. Thanks to all for the comments.
Good luck! They don't even tint or use tinted windshields anymore! Not much they are going to do for you other than say its performing as designed.
My sons 14 Explorer came with, at least, a front deep tinted windshield.
I guess Ford saves major money in these windows, just tinted for color and no reflectance.
Good luck!

After much research....
