Panoramic Roof Nightmare Saga
#101
Okay guys I have read a good bit of this but not sure what to do with mine. I have a early Jan 2015 truck with the pano moon roof and have had all Kinds of problems with the roof rattling first, ford fixed that by adjusting, then it was not opening rite, they lubed it up, after a couple weeks still not working right, they lubed it another way they said, still the thing is not working right. Also I'm getting a musky smell from up there. I have removed the wind screen entirely because it stunk so bad. Something is still smelling. I cannot find it. There is no leaks to my knowledge and the drains are for sure working. Also when I tilt the roof it doesn't seem to go all the way up like it should, please help
Honestly I don't know about any musky smells. I just went thru all of the sunroof info and possible TSB's(none) in Alldata--didn't see anything about stinky sunroofs.
Has your rattle/lube work been under some sort of extended factory warranty, or aftermarket warranty? Regardless, their work should be covered for 12k/12mo, so if you're within that period, take it back and speak to the service manager directly about your repeated visits(bring your invoices with you to show you're organized and have been there many times).

Ok guys, got the front panel of my pano roof back down and flush. I trusted this repair to the Ford specialists at ExpoVans, outside of Portland Oregon (expovans.com). MG there is a wizard with all things Ford; full-size Transit vans (he's working on engineering a badass 4x4 conversion, has aluminum-structured interiors, etc), also has the most insane 2013 E350 van with a full 2013 4th gen Cummins 6.7L swap will Allison tranny!!--all the Dodge wiring is now in the factory Ford connectors so it's all plug and play(van is for sale if you know anyone interested). Anyways, like I said, he's a wizard with Ford and has worked on my F150 before.
As you recall, I had ordered up the SunroofDoctor lift arms (Ford calls them glass brackets). In replacing them, they found that these two lift arm slides got out of sync and plastic bits broke off of them and jammed the track. Since this was MG's first time repairing one of these systems, it took an engineering mind to figure out how everything works before he found all the broken stuff making it not work; essentially reverse engineering Ford's problematic design to figure out why it's failed.
When they were pulling out the seam cover (between the 2 glasses), they also found a small metal clip had broken. This still needs to be repaired(couldn't get parts from Ford in time), and for now this piece is propped up with a piece of stiff foam to keep it from rattling, and so the sunshade only rolls forward halfway to cover the back half of the pano roof. This is fine for now--highest priority was to get the front pano glass flush again so that if/when it rains, no water is getting into the truck.
Sounds like they're looking to build test harnesses to sell in order to run the slide motor because the logic-based switch makes it very difficult to get things where they need to be during this repair. If anyone is interested in one of these, PM me.
If anyone is in Oregon or even SW WA and needs their pano system repaired, contact me and I can pass on MG's info.
Onto the pics (notice the stress cracks in numerous places, also how much plastic has broken off). It's obvious Ford has a real reliability problem here with this design and their plastic. My truck is only 3yrs old, 47k, and I can't believe the previous owner operated the pano roof THAT much to fatigue this plastic THAT much.
The initial issue (driver rear corner of front glass up, but pass rear corner still stuck down, after trying to tilt the front glass into "vent" position);

I had two different issues with the pano roof:
2015 KR: The roof rattled, that was fixed on the first try.
2016 Platinum: leaks where the panels meet. Dealer says it is normal, oddly the roof on my KR never leaked.

My '15 has had some slight rattles over bumps, sounds like it's coming from the far rear. Need to re-test now.
Haven't had any leaking that I've seen/smelled (knocking on wood).

I don't know why they make these parts of out crappy plastic... I'd pay an extra $100 for my moonroof if it was all metal parts... Then we wouldn't have these problems.
Someone needs to make METAL replacement parts for all these things.

To make the entire system out of CNC'd aluminum would be fairly pricey. Probably less cost to replace with plastic as needed.

Trying to figure it out!
Someone posted, either here or another forum, that they got these but I haven't heard back on how well they work.
