Default Panoramic Moonroof, is it worth the issues?

Ever since I missed out on buying a used 2017 F-150 I liked I have been researching the various options available and questioning if I should order what I would want. The moonroof is something I question if it is worth it. Many people say it is creaky, loud, and many seem to have broken and needed repair, which has taken weeks in some cases.

Is a person better off not getting the moonroof and avoid the issues? I think it looks super cool and have always enjoyed having a sunroof on my cars and SUV, never had on on a truck. If you have one, are you glad you have it, or do you wish you didn't have it and why?

Let's see... it's:
  • Expensive to buy in the first place
  • Prone to failure
  • Expensive to fix when it does fail
  • A way to let lots of heat into the truck
  • A way to let lots of noise into the truck
  • A way to let lots of water into the truck when the hailstorm cracks it.
  • A way to get water down your A pillars when the drains fail
On the plus side, it lets you see the sky... which I guess some people think is cool.

You'd have to use it an awful lot and *really* enjoy it to make it worth the problems. I'll never have one.

I have 100% enjoyed my moonroof and haven’t had any problems in the 2-1/2 years since I bought my truck.

I've had mine for a year and love it I worry about all of the same things that the above poster mentioned, and i dont even open mine up very frequently For me, the extra light coming in from the top makes the vehicle feel much more luxurious and spacious inside. I really enjoy that and it was worth the risk to me. May end up regretting it but haven't yet.

In 40 years of owning vehicles with roofs, this is the first 1 that i can use open at 80mph due to the ingenious wind deflector. It is a mesh material and does a great job. Yea, my hearing may be less that when i was 20, but my recent hearing test suggest i still have excellent hearing.

it lets in light to really brighten the cab. Maybe not as important in SC where the days are normally bright, but on a cloudy day, 2 thumbs up. No problems, no leaks, rattles, or whatever. I thought i wouldn’t buy another, because in my previous truck, a GMC Duramax, I never used it due to the noise and vacuum effect at speed even with the rear sliding window cracked.

The F150, like all other things my truck does, gets the job done! If you want it, get it.

I didn’t seek out a truck that had it, it just happened that the truck I bought came with it. I haven’t had any issues and don’t notice any real noise as others discribe. I don’t regret it one bit.

Just keep the channels and drains clear/clean......... Some are just prone to track issues.

P.S. The moonroof DOES LEAK, but the water drips in tracks and exits via drain pipes. Really weird watching it leak while it rains.

And its not friendly to high pressure car washes (You will get sprayed inside).

Aside from that, your choice.

Aside from TVSJR making me aware of a new fear that I hadn't thought about (hail storms, thank you so ever much), I love my pano. I am on my second truck with one and have had no issues with either. And no issues with high pressure car washes which I frequent weekly.

I live in WA state. If I lived in AZ I might have a different perspective especially regarding the heat.

I have 2 huge oak trees the completely canopy my driveway. I was initially worried about acorns dropping from 70 feet in the fall onto the moon roof. Knock on wood never had an issue, I personally feel they are a lot stronger then people assume

You have an awful lot of things to say about something that you don't have.
$1500 isn't too bad when you consider total cost.
Cost to fix?.....Warranty I've never had a moonroof fail
Heat.....It has a sunshade
Noise....Non Issue
Hailstorm.....Yeah, a meteor shower can crack it too.
Drain failure seems to have been resolved. You don't hear too much about it on newer trucks.

I didn't want the dual panel, but every Lariat truck available had one. With a little easy maintenance, it's been trouble free. I've been through some heavy downpours in the past 8 months without a drop in the cabin. To be honest, if I was ordering a truck, I wouldn't get it, but not for the reasons stated above. I liked the single panel moonroof and had one in my past 4 trucks, but I think all that glass in a truck is not necessary.
