Default Ordering a 5.0, need some advice

Hello,

I am ordering my 15 lariat with the 5.0 tomorrow and an having second thoughts about the 3.31 rear end. The is the same rear end that is in my 13 platty with the ecoboost but I was curious if others with the 5.0 upgraded to the 3.55? I do not want the truck to feel under powered with the 3.31 but I wasn't sure if the higher rear end gear would decrease the fuel mileage that much. Anyone already have a 15 with the 5.0 and 3.31 gears? I would like to get some input before I put my order in tomorrow.

Thanks

I test drove a 15 5.0 with the 3.31, and wrote about my experience in a couple other posts. Basically - if you don't tow and do a lot of highway mileage, the 3.31 is a perfectly capable gear. During normal traffic, I didn't have any problem keeping up or feeling like the truck was sluggish. I ordered the 3.55 because I do tow some, and do a fair amout of city driving.

I would only order the 3.55's, or better (3.73) if available.

I may be ordering a Lariat soon as well..
Out of interest, why is a 3.55 better on the highway (if not towing)?
I'll never tow anything, nor will I go off road. But I do put on a lot of highway road trip miles. Is there any reason I would want to go to the 3.55?

Thanks!

In my opinion, other than resale to someone who would tow there is no reason not to just get 3.31.

Maybe my post was confusing...the 3.31 is the better highway gear, not the 3.55. I was saying that if you DO NOT tow, or if you DO drive a lot of highway, the 3.31 is a good gear choice.

In your situation, I would get the 3.31, although I'd upgrade to the locker.

Cool, thanks! Even though I don't do off road, I was planning to get the FX4 package. I like the idea of having skid plates underneath for winter, and that package would also get me the locker. And I figure its probably better to have FX4 for resale..

Just an FYI, if you get a 5.0 with the FX4 package, you're automatically getting the 3.55 locker. I'm honestly not sure if you can revert back down to the 3.31 locker or not?

Not getting the FX4 is one thing I've wavered on sometimes, but I decided against it in the end. I will agree, from a value standpoint, it's a good option if you want a locking rear.

I'm looking at the Canadian build site right now. Under the FX4 package, it states that -if- you are getting the 5.0 or 3.5 engines, you get the 3.31 locker. If you are getting the 2.7 engine, then you get the 3.55. No idea why, but thats what it says.

Good deal. Sounds like you're good to go! That is odd, the US site says 2.7 and 5.0 come with 3.55 in the FX4.
