To list the 36 gal tank as an option of no regret and basically use it like an 18 gal tank makes no sense to me. But then again, I don't hoard ammo, food, or have a generator.
With our local grocery store limit of 30 gallons at Fuel Perks price, the bigger tank saves me alot of money.

That's not using it like an 18 gallon tank...if you burned 18g of fuel from an 18g tank, you might not even make it to the pump, and if you so much as hit some extra traffic on the way home from work would end up sitting on the side of the road...as opposed to the safety net of still having 18g

Life happens. Stuff happens. And you aren't getting through doomsday because you have half a tank of gas.

BTW, fuel shortages have happened far more recently than 1973.

Example I personally experienced

At the time of the 2008 shortage, I already subscribed to 1/2 is the new E...and it was really quite helpful.

Being prepared is not a bad thing.

Not that anybody else needs to, you are welcome to run your tank to E and rely on immediate availability of fuel everywhere at all times if that's your thing. It will probably be fine.

I always use Shell. Their rewards limit is 20 gallons. Yet another reason for me to fill at 1/2. Still debating on selling it now though, as I've been told that if I can't afford to fill it from empty, I shouldn't own it....

a fuel shortage and a fuel crisis are two entirely different things. filling up at 1/2 tank with a perpetual 18 gallons in reserve is kind of doomsday prepping level. 18 gallons at a bad 17 mpgs is 300 miles of travel or 24ish hours of idling. either way, doing that everyday "just in case" is kind of silly.

I live in that area, and it was a minor inconvenience, but it was nothing like a crisis...

Guess my tolerance for smaller safety net is a lot higher than the previous poster. At 18 gallons, I still have 315 miles of range at my fuel mileage average, which is he equivalent of a full tank on any of my other vehicles. YMMV...

The fact that 18 gallons is just shy of 3/4 of a tank on the standard size tank may also say something.

I also loath stopping at the gas station any more than I have to... but that's just me.

Yes, a crisis and shortage are two different things...for one of them, you want gasoline storage that exceeds even what your extended range tank will hold.

But, my point being, filling up at half on the 36 tank is not treating it like an 18 gallon tank, when your risk aversion and want of being prepared means never running a tank empty.

If you are the type to just chug up to the pump on fumes, and you get 17 mpg on a bad day, you can drive at least 23,000 miles a year only filling up once a week on the 26 gallon tank. Seems alright, not sure why the 36 would be such a huge advantage there. Heck if you drove a not uncommon 12,000 miles per year you could fill up once every 2 weeks on just the 26

I would hope that filling up at say an 1/8 of a tank on the gauge (still leaving 80 or so miles on the tank of gas) would be very reasonable for the normal person. The low fuel light comes on at 50 miles left and there is still 2 gallons left in the tank when the miles left reaches zero at that point. even at zero miles left you can go for another 40 odd miles.

The short answers are a) convenience of not having to stop for fuel as often b) while towing you get much longer range before refuel stops.

Who cares how much fuel someone fills up their 36 gallon fuel tank with? Some people don't have the money to top it off every fill up. Some of you guys would argue with the sky if you didn't like its shade of blue.
