Default Oil Change Interval F150 vs Nissan Rogue

I am curious if anyone knows why my 2016 F150 3.5 will take the oil change intervals out to almost 10,000 miles with Synthetic Blend oil but my wifes 2018 Nissan Rogue with a normally aspirated engine has a recommended oil change of 5000 miles using full Synthetic oil?

Its just a Nissan thing. They want to earn your dollars.

Look at the brake fluid schedule. Every 20K miles.

Who is doing the recommending? Or is the interval given in the Nissan owner's manual? I ask because there have, lately, been a couple of consumer news-type shows highlighting the aggressive promotion of unnecessary auto services to customers under false pretenses, for example claiming that the vehicle's warranty would be void if the customer followed the handbook service requirements instead of the dealership's. My daughter got rid of her Dodge pickup because their dealership was pestering her in this way, and recently a friend traded in his Mazda CX5, partially for the same reason.

If my dealer ever said this to me, There would be a phone call to corporate so fast it would make their heads spin.

It is in the manual including recommending Synthetic oil, I didn’t believe the dealer when he told me so I looked it up. I only ask because it always seemed to me that the OLF on the F150 stretches it too far but people keep saying that the oil is so much better, why would Nissan shorten it so much with a standard 4cyl. engine.

Ford uses a oil life monitor. A computer algorithm that calculates the oil change interval based on numerous factors such as engine temperature, outside temperature, miles driven, how long the engine runs at operating temperature, throttle inputs, length of trips in a cycle, towing, and many other factors. Nissan doesn't use a oil life monitor, they still use a time and mileage based interval. Depending on those calculations Ford's IOLM may indicate an oil change at the maximum 10,000 miles or may indicate a oil change in half that time.

I'd say their powerplant engineers have done it for good reason and you should trust them. Oil life isn't determined by miles as much as things like shear loading. My motorcycle takes Mobile 1 4T racing 10-40 in both the engine and divorced transmission. At the 5,000 mile recommended change interval the engine oil looks and feels new, but the transmission oil looks like it's been the bike for ten years. You can feel a noticeable degradation in shifting at about a thousand miles, and after the oil change it feels great again. The difference in this case is 100% shear loading with the transmission's straight cut gears. The only high shear load in the entire motorcycle engine is the oil pump.

On my 18 5.0, I'm at 5,000 on my current oil. Have about 200 miles towing and about 30% around town driving. My oil life is showing 48%.

I generally just shoot for 5000 miles. I'm certain that I'd not have a problem going to 7500 miles with the semi-synthetic I use. But I'm a little cautious.

The engine oil monitor gives me more than 7500 miles even, and it is acceptable to the manufacturer. So maybe I'm more than a little cautious.

Coming from a professional technician, DONT go 10k.on oil changes. Period.

Open a 150k engine up thats had 10k oil changes and let me know what you see.

It's a about making themselves look good EPA wise on that yearly maintenance cost.
