Right, because there is no need to change the oil early. I changed my first oil at 9,100 miles. The OLM tripped because it was a year, not on mileage. In fact, I was leaving on a trip to drive 3,000 miles and was at just over 6,000 at a year and had so much life left on it that I simply reset the OLM, drove the trip, came home and changed it. Next change would have been only a few thousand miles based on time again, so I went 18 months and then did it even though it still wasn't a lot of mileage.

I would say mine is a good mix. I primarily just drive to and from work, which is around 20-30 minutes depending on traffic, and is mostly on the highway.

My whole thing with oil changes is it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg, so I do it sooner. I did the first oil change at 2k miles because the dealership gave it to me for free, and I figured the motor was breaking in so why not? Then I did it myself at 5k, again just because I figured why not? It's my first brand new truck and I want it to last, so even if I'm being excessive, it's not hurting anything. Now I'll make math easy and change it every 5k miles. Like Scott91370 said, Mobil 1 full synthetic at Walmart is cheap.

Glad there's others that don't think I'm crazy. Something else I wonder is what's the oil's properties once the OLM is reading 50% left?

I didn't do the 2,000 one, didn't want to pay someone to do it, and being in an apartment couldn't do it myself. I'm going to do one at 5,000 and then every 5,000 after that is my preliminary thinking. Better safe than sorry, right?

I use Motorcraft oil filter and Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic. Change every 6,000. Tow about 1,000lbs every weekend, driving city/hwy during the weekdays, race my brother's 5.0 Stang every now and then (though I always lose...waiting on a tune). My oil and filter looks fine. I don't think oil is that expensive. 6qts of oil and filter cost me about $40 to do it myself.
So changing every 5K seems fine.
