Default O-ring Coating Failure at Oil Chnage

Hello All!!

2016 F150 2.7 with about 8K Miles.

(Yes, I changed the oil before the IOLM said so. Why, because I am a out of control rebel.)

This is the second time I changed the oil. The following issue was not present at the first oil change around 3500 miles.

This time the red coating on the orings around the oil filter housing failed. (see pics) I have never seen that before, and it certainly doesn't look good. I cut the filter apart. Looked great even under magnification no metal or Red material from the orings. It does not look the red material found its way into the engine.

The filter and orings came from the parts counter at Ford.

Anybody else seen this before? I should bring these back to Ford.

Thanks, CD

Mine was like this after my last oil change (about 3000 miles)

Edit: I had been letting the dealership change my oil and assumed that they weren't changing the O-rings.

I wouldn't worry, but man that is an odd looking oil filter.

I assume the red coating serves two purposes, one is verify genuine Motorcraft filter cartridge is being used and two the o-rings are replaced during the filter replacement.

I would clean up the residue and continue on.

As a DIY oil changer, I would be very anguished to find the O-rings on my 2.7 canister oil filter in such a condition. Since my son, chief tech in a large motor pool of vehicles using Ford VT365 PowerStroke engines with nearly identical canister filters (and plastic drain plugs), was handy for my first 2.7 oil change, I asked him to look over my shoulder as a mentor. The 1st recommendation he made was to lubricate the replacement O-rings when replacing the filter. Why? To prevent abrasion/pinching of dry O-rings against the dry canister walls as the filter housing is tightened. Perhaps that precaution would prevent the scenario you noted on your engine.

I noticed the same thing on my 2nd oil change. On my first oil change the factory original o-rings had no red coating. Im sure it probably makes no difference, but just an observation.

I have done 5 changes so far and have never experienced anything looking like that.
Does the oil smell like it has a lot of fuel in it?

Mine looked like that too on my last two oil changes. I bought the filter and included o-rings at the dealer. I just cleaned up the filter housing and replaced the O-rings. Don't think its anything to worry about, but hopefully Ford will do away with this red coating eventually.

Totally normal as far as I can tell. I went to the dealer near me, and the filters they had also had o-rings with the coating. I believe it is a dry-film lubricant/sealant PTFE coating on the o-ring. If you rub it between your fingers, it is not gritty at all and disperses. If you google PTFE coated o-rings, it seems to be a newer technology being used.
