Don't think I've seen such a high level of self-absorption before. Me, me, me.....

I hate to hijack this thread by returning to the topic but I note the O.P. never engaged 4H or 4L until after he was in trouble. And then erroneously compared results to full time AWD vehicles.
Do not remember reading this in the F150 owner's manual but in my former 2008 F250 the manual explicitly stated the truck must roll 10 feet after engaging 4WD for things to slip in place. The a few months later witnessed a friend in prior generation SuperDuty had parked his camper in 2WD and could not drive out of his spot but for wheel spinning, having sunk in the wet ground. 4WD would not engage. That day we all learned to engage 4H any time we drove off pavement. Especially before parking on grass.
I don't think anything is wrong with the O.P.'s truck. The noise he heard was 4WD attempting to engage but could not because the wheels were not turning.

I agree for the most part. When he shifted into 4 whatever, the TC likely engaged as normal, but since he was sitting still, one or both IWEs could have been disengaged, and once the power was put to them, one or both meshed, and yep, they could bang like that, if the OP wasn't gentle enough. If he was going for 4L, it'll REALLY bang!!!! Torque multiplication.
