Default Newbie with 3.5 Ecoboost gen 2 questions

Newbie here,

I signed up here after reading all the good info on this site. I think it's the best F150 forum I've seen yet. Anyways...........

I'm finally getting close to buying an F150 and it will be a 2018 model.

I've searched here and at a couple other F150 sites but I can't find any real input on the differences between Gen 1 to Gen 2 direct injection 3.5 EB engines. I see both are available choices on the build and price options.

I saw a few posts where some guys were saying the new gen EB gets worse mileage than the older gen 1 model. I'm not sure which model and if it had the new 10 speed trans.

I see a high output EB and a regular EB. Is there a huge difference in power by the High Output over the original and therefore substantially less MPG's?

Is the High Output EB engine the one with direct injection or do both 3.5 EB engines have it with just one having higher output?

I'd like to have the 3.5 EB all things being equal. It's been a couple years since I test drove them but the acceleration of the 3.5 Ecoboost is awesome.

For those of you who have the newer EB how is the mileage with the new 10 speed and which EB engine do you have?

Welcome!

Your questions can be answered quickly.

1.) You have no choice but to get a gen 2 Ecoboost. They stopped making gen1 3.5EB in 2016

2.) You can only get the HO version in the Raptor. Only engine available in it actually.

I hope that helps!

All of the new 3.5EBs are the gen 2 ones. The high output you mentioned is the raptor engine. The difference from the gen 1 is the new ones have dual injection (direct and port) which should help with carbon build up common on all DI engines. It also has electronic waste gates for the turbos, lighter spools or something for less turbo lag, and a lighter camshaft. Maybe some other small stuff I'm forgetting.

I don't know of any reports saying the new powertrain gets worse MPGs.

Don't forget it comes with the 10-speed transmission. Under hard acceleration it shifts like a sport bike!

3.5 Gen 2 also gets auto-shutoff doesn't it?

Yes and it drives me nuts.
Also, my mileage at only 1500 miles is better than my 2012 3.5 EB. same gears and the new truck is a screw and the old one was a scab. Almost 1.5mpg better.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm waiting for the 2018's to hit the lot so I can check out the new colors in person.
