Default The new 3.0L in the Lincoln Aviator

Gang,

Admittedly, this isn't an F150 topic; hopefully - the title was clear enough to avoid the inevitable comments on that. I've posted here because this audience is educated on the F150 powertrain options and this new entry by Ford (albeit Lincoln) is interesting.

the new Aviator (think explorer size) will be standard with RWD, AWD optional. That by itself is interesting given the FWD bias of almost all unibody SUVs.

The BASE engine will be a 3.0L twin turbo with 400hp and 400ft/lbs or torque. WOW.

OK - so, what I'm hoping to discuss here is: "why" the new engine vs. tuning of the 2.7? Will the 3.0 migrate to the F150?

it seems expensive for Ford to have two relatively "close" engine sizes.

At one time I had a Lincoln LS. A very nice car and fun to drive. It was built along with the Jaguar X-type on the DEW platform with an option for a V8. The Lincoln got a 5 speed transmission it shared with the Explorer, while the Jag got a Getrag 6 speed. The AJ V8 used in both had the same bore and stroke. The Lincoln was a 3.9 liter @ 280HP while the Jag was a 4.0L @ 300hp. Because it is a Lincoln and they need to differentiate it from a ford it gets it's own engine. The Lincoln engine will probably require 91 octane gas whereas the Ford can run on 87. Ford sorely needs to rebuild the Lincoln identity much as GM did with Cadillac.

Don't know the answer, but seeing some very interesting future options for the new Ranger. Imagine that motor in a next gen aluminum ranger extended cab short bed.

more than likely .. 3 seems to be the magic number with v6's .. anything below that hardly sells .. except the 2.7 in the Audi .. that sold like crazy

The Aviator, like the Explorer and PI Utility, actually become standard rear-wheel drive vehicles with a transfer case and AWD system like our F150s. This also means the motor gets mounted the right way, not transverse. They are also hyping the hybrid drivetrain... which makes me wonder if they designed the 3.0 to be inherently more hybrid-compatible in some way.

They only need to increase each cylinder by .05 CC to make a 2.7 a 3.0. Different crank and rods, and boom there you go, 3.0.

Except that the 2.7 is the largest selling motor in the F150.

not necessarily by choice its probably due to marketing, sales push and incentives .. its like the thread where the guy said he went to the dealer and all they had were 2.7's

and I've been to dealers that don't have but a couple 2.7s. Each market is different, and very rarely do you hear a 2.7l owner saying he wish he had something else.
