Default Navigation woes

I have a 2018 F150 XLT, Supercrew, 2.7L, with the built in Navigation. I have owned a 2013, 2015, and 2017 F150 previously, but this is my first Ford with factory navigation.

My problem is this: the voice from the navigation seems to be living in an alternate universe. Almost every time I use it, it works okay for 10, 15, 20 minutes, then it goes berserk. The first time I used it, I was just trying it out, navigating from my work location to home. A commute I have been doing every day for the past 8 years. It was going along just fine, and then the voice tells me, “in 100 yards, turn left onto I-69”.

WTH??? I was a good 2 miles away from I-69, and my route home does not use I-69. Looking at the actual screen display, that seemed okay.

Second attempt at use, it directed my correctly to an address about 20 miles away. On the trip home, after about 10 minutes, more insanity. “In ¼ mile, turn right onto I-610”. I was headed for the freeway, and was approximately ¼ mile away. But not I-610, I was approaching state highway 290. I-610 was a good 7 or 8 miles away. Once again, the screen display looked okay.

I have very little confidence in the dealerships ability to diagnose and fix any problems with the infotainment system. I called the service department to ask if they would reload the firmware and the map data, and all they would say is “Make an appointment and we will look at it.” From which I fully expect nothing more than “unable to duplicate problem”.

Anyone else experienced anything like this with the Ford navigation system?

Check your settings. You may have it set to the "shortest" route vs the fastest. The shortest route will have you taking the back roads, and it may be routing you around toll roads.

I don't listen to the voice. Mine might do the same thing, but I keep it muted.

Make sure you have it set to the correct region. It can do some wacky things if it isn't.

Why would you use factory nav when you have Waze on CarPlay/Android?

Because factory nav does not burn up mobile data and does not rely on a data connection for the nav. plus i prefer the built in nav

^ Yea, sorry. I realize that didn’t add anything to the thread and it’d drive me nuts if my factory nav did that, I have had to use it twice and was glad I had it both times. IId definitely talk to the dealer.

Does the arrow on the screen accurately show where you are when you are just driving around? Have you changed the size of the tires? The GPS relies on the wheel speed and other sensors just as much as the GPS antenna signal to know where the truck is. I get wanting to use the factory maps even though I'm all about using google maps through android auto. The Ford maps are pretty accurate inside beltway 8 in Houston. Once you get outside of there you will want to use Google maps/Waze. My street in Katy/Fulshear isn't even on the maps in my 2017.

I feel your pain OP. Navigating the 610 / 69 intersection can be interesting. I had the same issue with my '09 FX4 and have it occasionally on my iPhone (when driving rentals). I would try running a manual update on Sync. Next would be doing a reset. Last is a trip to the dealer (that was the fix on my '09). Good luck!

HERE does not need a data connection and does not use (much) data. It is the Nokia offering and the largest map provider to the Federal government.
