I would think even with the added options and 4WD it would still weigh less, but not the case.

I thought I read somewhere that Ford shaved 700lbs off the body, but gained 300-400lbs by beefing up the frame?

The published weight for a 2016 F-150 Supercab 145" wheelbase with 4WD is 253 lbs. more than that of the same truck with 2WD. A problem with weigh scales is that they weigh everything, including the wheels. When I upgraded from the OEM tires to ones with a higher load capacity and added a heavy duty rear anti-sway bar and a double leaf set of SuperSprings I added weight that in theory reduces the payload of the truck. The reality is that the GVWR is based on the truck factory configuration which is why the "payload" varies so much between the same model trucks depending on the wheels. I have seen F-250 with fancy wheels that had a lower payload rating than an F-150 on the dealer lot. Larger wheels and low profile tires turned the trucks into toys.

My 2008 XLT Sport Trac 4.6L 3V V8 4WD truck with composite bed. With it's Hard ABS bi-fold locking tonneau cover (68 lbs), it was 5062 lbs according to Ford (6280 lbs GVWR - 1218 lbs payload). Without the cover it was 4994 lbs.

The 2016 F150 XLT Screw 5.0L 4WD truck is 5110 lbs from Ford (7000 lbs GVWR - 1890 lbs payload).

Amazingly the F150 is only 116 lbs heavier for a full size truck!!

*Edit*

I should had mentioned that if I had the same small 23 gallon gas tank, and the smaller 8.8" 3.55 ratio open differential as the Sport Trac, the 2016 F150 would likely be the same weight if not lighter than the Sport Trac!

Nope, my 2012 F150 was configured EXACTLY the same with 36 gallon tank and 3.73 9.75" differential. The 2016 does not have the chrome package the 2012 had though. The weight difference is that the 2016 is 660 lbs LIGHTER.

You are thinking of the super duty, which is where this happened. Ford did beef up the frame of the F150, but used significantly more high strength steel to do it (which is lighter), so there was actually a weight reduction from the frame too.

My 2013 FX4 (5.5' bed) w/ Luxury package + 20" LT tires = 6,500
My 2018 Lariat FX4 (6.5' bed) w/ 502A package + 20" LT tires = 5,700

700 pounds difference with the longer bed.

My 2016 SCREW 2WD with the 5.0 weighs 4,787 (6,800 GVWR-2,013 Payload). Not bad for a full size truck.
