Same thing just happened to my PVD wheels when I got new tires put on at Discount. Rest of the wheel looks great but the rims are chipped to hell - all four wheels same issue. Think it's the PVD issue again or lack of care from Discount? 62,000miles on truck, so out of warranty and not sure they'll even take a look at it; but planning trip to dealer tomorrow to show/ask. Maybe a second question: Have any of you had issues with aftermarket wheels versus OEM and not being able to get them balanced or keep them balanced? My son is a Toyota mechanic and he said to only go with OEM wheels because of this issue, which I've never heard. Maybe on really cheap aftermarket wheels, but I would think that quality mfgs out there would put out a great product - which would include being a good, balanced wheet?

I just had one replaced under warranty. The service writer said it looked it was damage from a tire change. I looked him in the face and it is well documented that the pad coating has been flaking offhand called BS. he said he had to call ford. The writer is a slime ball.

Is he a slime ball because he didn’t agree with you or is there another reason?

He has been a slime ball every time I deal with him. For almost every item, he would come back a reason to try and not repair things. One prime example was the unexpected tail gate opening issue. 1 week before I got the letter, he said they could find anything wrong when I picked the truck up. That was the second time it was in for it. He told me told me he has not heard of any issues. Again BS. I brought links to this forum and corp line was you cant believe what you read on the internet. I could go on, but don't want to hijack the tread. But in the end, the truck gets fixed.

I had all four of mine replaced under warranty from Ford. My dealer told me that the deciding factor is the difference between the PVD coating and the black material underneath it. If you can run your finger along the area that is peeling and feel a difference between the PVD and the area where it is gone, they will replace them. If you can't feel a difference, then they won't replace them.

Same thing happened to mine, in the same spots, also after getting new tires on at Discount last month. It's nothing to do with Discount. They clamp the wheels from the inside, not the outside. The PVD coating was already in the process of failing, and simply breaking the bead of the tire caused it to flake off. More than likely they would have started flaking on their own before too long had you not changed the tires. It's happened to my buddy's King Ranch as well with the factory tires still on.
I went by my dealer the next day for an alignment and brought it up to the service advisor when I pulled in. He stated he's seen it before but because i'm out of the 3/36 (44k currently) there was nothing he could do without approval from Ford. He suggested I call them and argue my case. That was about as painful as I thought it would be. The first call I was hung up on. The second call I was transferred to the "wheel warranty department" only to be told that I didn't have a wheel warranty (I know this and tried to tell them before they transferred me) and there was nothing that department could do, so I was transferred back and hung up on again. The third call I finally got to someone in the warranty department who knew what she was doing, listened to my case, took all the notes she needed and said she would verify my story with the dealer that afternoon then let me know if I had any options. Much to my surprise she called me back that evening said my story checked out and then said there were no programs offered by Ford at this time to remedy the wheel situation, but to hang on to any receipts for repair/replacement in case they do come out with some kind of recall program in the future so I could be reimbursed. Frustrated, I explained to her the other issues i've had with this truck (namely the oil pan being replaced twice now and the transmission being overfilled from one of their "certified technicians" performing the park pin recall before I bought it) and that my experience with my first F150 after growing up in a family of Ford vehicles has me thinking of different options with different brands. From there, my case was escalated and re-assigned to someone from the truck warranty division. This person reached out and went through the same steps of listening to my case on the wheels as well as all of the other issues i've had, told me the same story of "there's no programs available right now for wheel replacements", but did offer the Powertrain Premium Care extended warranty for free. Covered up to 100K with a $100 deductible, rental coverage for up to 10 days if needed, and $100 in towing costs if needed. I specifically asked if this covered the oil pan which he confirmed (and looked it up myself to confirm), so while this doesn't help with the wheels at least i'm covered a little longer for WHEN my oil pan leaks again. I'll give the rep from the truck department credit - he was very prompt on communication both via e-mail and phone.
Moral of the story here - if you've had some of the same issues i've had with my truck, maybe try the corporate route to see if you can get something for your troubles.
Thanks for the explanation of the route you took; expecting the same "nothing we can do" when I take it by the dealer; which is BS because the defect would have shown itself if I would have gotten the tires changed sooner (i.e. within the warranty period), and then would probably have been covered. I work in the machine business in different industry and even when things are out of warranty, if we know other customers have had an issue with the same thing, we'll cover it with no questions asked. Ford doesn't realize that they're alienating their long-time customers by not taking care of small things like this. They know they've got an issue and a lot of their customers do to - so take care of it!
Thanks for the rant space. Now to go see the service writers and then start my call/write/social media campaign with Ford............
Stay tuned

Had to laugh when I read this post. Seems like all these service writers went to different schools together. I got the exact same line from my GMC dealer. It is frustrating to say the least. They act like you are dumber than dirt and know nothing about the car they have never driven. Meanwhile you drive it every day and know when something’s not right.
I know this is an old thread, but for the benefit of those that find it by searching..
there's another thread where a member bought a chrome paint pen and a clear coat paint pen, and the pictures show how well that works!
The clear coat prevents hazing.
These paint pens are available on Amazon.
$13 and $11.
