You would have thought, given the number of wheels Ford is probably replacing over the fake chrome, that Ford would have stopped using the Fake stuff, and gone for a real coating. (Yes, they can chrome aluminum.)... or just gone with Polished Aluminum.
I see Ford go out if its way to save $2 on the build of their trucks, then see them pull this crap... makes no sense sometimes.
Well... My new wheels are IN! Dealership is switching them for me this Wednesday. (I am also going ahead and replacing the tires, and believe it or not, the dealership is beating the price of the local tire shops.)
Hey, that's a different problem, no? Those wheels are clearly STEEL. Ford used to sell steel wheels with a chrome plastic cover as 'chrome wheels' (talk about misleading), and it seems exactly like that on those wheels, since you can clearly see the black steel inside the wheel, but maybe it's just a coating now. Anyway, the PVD process, at least as far as I know, bonds much better to an ALUMINUM wheel, like the 20s on my Platinum, and other trims. The PVD is far from chrome looking IMO; looks more like polished aluminum, but more 'blotchy'. As we all know, it can also peel off, but at least you'd have the aluminum underneath, not steel. Hopefully an expert can shed some more light on this issue. Since I know the PVD finish is flaky, I don't use anything on them; just high pressure soap at the carwashes, and the rest by hand with a microfiber rag.
Good Luck with your second set.... Ford replaced my first set under warranty as well (2015 F150 20" PVD wheels). Second set started doing it less than a year after they replaced them. All 4 wheels both times. 2nd time they offered me $1000 towards new wheels but only for the same style. Wheels are over $1000 a piece so they wanted me to pay over $3000 to buy the same problem I had already experienced twice...? Ridiculous!! Have always been a Ford man but this PVD wheel issue seems to be rampant. Don't know anyone who has had them that doesn't see this issue. Some sooner than others. Pay $50K for a truck with astronomically overpriced junk for wheels. Really wish would Ford would own up to this and make it right. Or somebody force them to.
I found a place in Detroit that will refinish them for $750.00. They will also trade you a refinished set and you give them your old ones. Plus $250.00 shipping.
Where is the place you used I would like to get mine done. It is sad Ford doesn't own up to the bad quality and make it right.

Even with aluminum instead of steel, the aluminum starts corroding under the tire bead area and causes the tire to start leaking slowly from the bead. This is a common problem with traditional chrome clad aluminum wheels too.
