OP I wish you a speedy recovery, and hopefully the legal aspects of everything aren't too painful.
Very good advice. But I wonder, if its rush hour in downtown Denver and you stop a car length or two behind the car in front of you, only to have another car squeeze into that space, can you still get cited if you get hit from behind and you are too close to the car in front of you?

Besides, he already said he was an a dead stop waiting...so he wasn't moving.

I understand his logic totally, so in the case of such an incident, he could inch forward if he were to see an approaching vehicle coming in too hot. But it looks like in this case, the Gen 12 F150 was coming in with no brake applied whatsoever, so he probably did the best thing by maintaining brake pressure and bracing for impact.
Agreed, I used to drive for FedEx...Their driver training was to always leave at least a car length in front of you at a light so you could move forward if someone was coming in hot, minimize or avoid impact if you were hit from behind, and ability to get out of delayed traffic to deliver packages. Job well done! Nothing more could have been done in this accident.

The other driver may well have seen the huge gap and assumed you were still moving forward and so he didn't start breaking accordingly.

Now he obviously should have been paying enough attention to get stopped in time without any trouble... no argument.... just an observation.
Anybody that drives using your logic should have their license revoked.

I'd bet my last $ he was looking at his phone instead of where he was going. No skid marks at all, *****ty insurance - what a jerk. I'd sue him and get a lien put on his house / boat / whatever I could.

I know what defensive driving courses teach. I know what you are taught when you get your CDL.
When I tool my CDL class they told us to leave a large gap between the truck and the car in front of you. I think it is more designed to make sure you plan on leaving lots of room to get your vehicle stopped than anything else.

Any of you willfully ignorant folks acting like its normal to leave a two car gap between each car at every stop light... When and where have you ever seen that in your life? I never have.
In any city I get stuck driving in if you leave more than a few feet between your bumper and the bumper in front of you there is one thing that will happen every time. Someone farther back in the line will see that gap and decide to come flying up either in the turning lane or on the shoulder of the road and try to cram their car in there so they can skip a few spots in line. But they will not be skilled enough to get the rear of their car out of the turning lane all the way.
Next the light turns green only for the turning lane first, because that's how traffic patterns work, and now no one stuck behind the ******* gap filler can go because he is blocking their lane.
Then the light finally turns green for the gap filler and he get in front of you and goes on. But only about two cars got to make it through the left turn light because the gap filler screwed everything up and the rest of those folks are pissed and are not going to get stuck at the light again because of that *** hole so they go ahead and keep going, running the red light and blocking the flow of traffic going the other way, continuing the chain reaction of idiocy and road rage.

If you really think what I am saying is incorrect you either live in some utopia or never drive in any kind of city environment...

I absolutely hate it when some drivers don't pay more attention while driving. I have people get mad at me (road rage) for flashing my brake lights when they are tailgating.

Also in this situation, many times the person trying to squeeze in will not be able to get all the way into the space. They will just pull in at a 45 degree angle. Now if you do get rear ended and driven into the car in front of you your bumper is hitting the side of their vehicle, right in the doors, you know... where the people are sitting. Not good.

I leave a two car length gap when I drive and stop. Don't care if someone cuts in, it is what it is. And I drive in Dallas which is jam packed with idiots. I'd rather be "that guy" rather than be "that guy with a trashed front end" from all the panic stoppers
