Are you guys painting these yourself or having it professional painted, or new ones all together?

When I replaced the black textured mirror caps with PTM mirror caps I used a plastic trim removal tool to pry it enough so I could get my fingers behind it. Then I just pulled them off. I broke 1 tab on one cap and none on the other. I wasn't concerned about broken tabs. I threw the old caps in the trash.

All done myself buddy...not hard to do... I was a tad intimidated at first but just bit the bullet and did it. FYI - the poster above is correct that you should expect to break at least 1 tab per side unless you're extremely lucky. Honestly this is probably the easiest mod i've done in a while for the least amount of effort.

I pulled mine off and broke several tabs to replace the black plastic caps with chrome. I chose to break tabs rather than risking breaking a mirror.

I pulled my chrome and installed painted caps yesterday and your pictures were the most helpful, especially this one. I watched the putco and other youtube videos and even attempted to muscle the cap off without removing the mirror but chickened out. I basically followed your pictures and it was a 15 minute per side job. I did put a rubbermaid tote and some soft material under the mirror in case it slipped(tied it up just to keep it from falling too) and did not disconnect anything electric. The best suggestion is to have someone hold a flashlight or strap on one of those headlamps to look behind the mirror and line up the flathead with that groove, then twist the screwdriver as you pull on the mirror and it pops off easily. I did not fight with the lower interior tab on the cap either, I just clipped it off and will glue it back just in case I want to reinstall the chrome caps later. The OEM cover did have a different part number on it and 2 extra pieces of plastic but it felt the same in weight and just snapped into place perfectly. There was a handprint on the inside of the cab but the painted sides looked and matched perfect. Got them both for 75 bucks. I snapped some pics of the truck and it is dirty but you can see they make a big difference. I really need to do something with the door handles and grill now.

Ok I read the whole thread....... Very helpful on how to remove but I want to sand down and paint my textured black mirror caps and put them back on. It seems its impossible to do this without breaking at least 1 tab either through the brute force prying method or the taking off the mirror method.... Has anyone actually gotten it off WITHOUT breaking any tabs? Seems most of you guys are replacing yours, but I want to reuse mine. I guess I could JB weld the 1 tab back on, but I'd rather have it done cleanly and not need tape/glue so they stay on.

Saw a video of a guy on youtube who did his Ram 1500 and he just taped off the housing. I guess I could do that, but would rather just remove it unharmed. Save myself $120 on reusing my mirrors instead of buying new mirror caps.
