Is the Limited worth the price?

Probably lot of different opinions...but..
I'm getting out of a 19 Silverado LTZ. Long story short, I bought it in Dec and it has literally been in the shop more days than I've been able to drive it.

So, it's truck month. Looks like you can use either the dealer rebates OR the 0% for 72. Math wise, the 0% comes out better for me.

But is the Limited worth the extra price? My wife loves the interior. The engine upgrade is nice...but it's not night and day difference over the Platinum. 20s or 22s...really doesn't matter to me as I'm not a huge fan of any of the factory wheels.

I'd appreciate some input here. I have a few days to decide as my Silverado is in the shop right now and I have to wait until it's fixed to trade it in. I've already put in my app to hold the 0% but the price difference between the two trucks is really bugging me.

Arsenal11 04-27-2019 05:18 PM

Tough question, it’s a personal preference if the interior, folding running boards is worth another 5-8K over the Lariat then yes it is worth it.

centexlimited 04-27-2019 06:22 PM

Its worth it, if you can afford to have all the bells and whistles. Also if don't like to have a basic vehicles all the others have to drive.
I would not ask anyone a vehicle question, all my friends know can afford anything I want. They can not, so you know their replies.
Cash buyer here, no interest to be considered over the course of a loan, which adds up on 70 to 100K vehicle prices.
A Raptor might have been ok, all do is drive down Home D and Wal Mart, But its cool looking which checks boxes for me.

ModularFord 04-27-2019 06:47 PM

Just be aware the limited has very low payload and towing capacities. Very low.

nutflush19 04-27-2019 06:50 PM

Yes those 22" rims mean no max tow compared to all other f-150 trims. no 6.5 box either If I recall correctly. personally I don't like that interior color.

SCrewYou 04-27-2019 06:58 PM

Only you can answer if it's worth it to you or not.

sandhills 04-27-2019 07:33 PM

Up to you, but I ordered a 19 Limited last July, came in first of year. Love it. To me it is worth the extra dollars, but it is a personal thing with each buyer.

Meathead 04-27-2019 08:45 PM

No

MIsnowman 04-27-2019 09:42 PM

Like you already pointed out in your original post, really comes down to personal preference. I don’t think it is worth the premium price over a Platinum, especially not with the big price hike to the Ltd for 2019. Sure you get the Raptor motor for 2019, but the regular 3.5 eco has plenty of power imo. Then you also have the lower payload and the god awful looking 22” wheels. The paint colors are also more limited on the Limited, guess that makes sense. lol The big positive for the Limited is that it’s pretty easy to shop for one since there aren’t too many options. Pretty much pick a color and go.

13XLTEco 04-27-2019 10:38 PM

No new vehicle is worth the price.

Stu Cazzo 04-27-2019 10:42 PM

If you bought a Paltinum...what could you buy with the extra money saved?

kenv47 04-28-2019 12:23 AM

Anything is worth the price, if it`s worth it To You. You never know if you are going to be around tomorrow, so if you want it & can afford it than go for it. Everyone`s situation is different.

13XLTEco 04-28-2019 01:52 AM

Just because you want something and you think it is worth it to you doesn't make it worth what you paid. Only millenials and generation X would think that way. You don't agree on a price because you think it is actually worth that price. You agree because you want or need the vehicle and don't want someone to come by the next day and snatch it up. The only time it matters what the vehicle is worth is when you want to sell it or trade it. Then it is only worth what you get for it. All new vehicles are way overpriced. Metals are sold by weight. Craftsmanship is priced by quality. What makes most new vehicles cost what they do is the technology and electronics. Like it or not.

tmcolegr 04-28-2019 10:25 AM

I recently purchased a 2019 Platinum 701A over a 2019 900A Limited for the following reasons:

Limited has:
  • Higher initial purchase price
  • Less towing capacity
  • Not available with 53C Max. Trailer Tow Package
  • Not available with 55A FX4 Package
  • Not available with 54W Trailer Tow Mirrors
  • Tailgate step is not a std. feature of the 900A Pkg further increasing the cost of the limited
  • Tray Style Floor Liners are optional as the 900A is not available with the 55A FX4 Package further increasing the cost of the Limited
  • Limited not available in Blue Jean, Magma Red or Metallic exterior paint color

If none of that is important to you, purchase the Limited

Exactly, if you have the money and do not have to be the average joe, than get what you want. Naysayers are the sour grape crowd who can not afford
one in first place. They try justifying by what the cost differences are. Well if cost no issue, than mute point. Like my X5M is it worth 115K, is to me, value
no, its lower production and fast, with horrible depreciation. That is the mute point to me, 4 years later after warranty gone so is vehicle. Same with Vette.
Get what want people and the middle finger to the boo hoo crowd. Its all about you, not someone else.

MarkY 04-28-2019 12:01 PM

You can't get a Limited without the pano roof. Deal killer for me. Not sure if the 36 gallon tank is available in the Limited.

Tolson37 04-28-2019 12:36 PM

Yes why not

icecoldak 04-28-2019 01:11 PM

Yes do it--The engine upgrade and dual exhaust are the best thing, Yes 36G tank standard as with rear wheel well liners! I went from 2018 Limited to the 19 and would not look back! Work them on price as I got mine for 66K and change!

Stu Cazzo 04-28-2019 01:17 PM

Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

That said do Limited owners really use the truck as a truck? ie - to tow and haul?
Maybe some do I guess, possibly?

tvsjr 04-28-2019 01:17 PM

To me, the Limited is the replacement for the Mark LT... in other words, a glorified grocery getter for the bearded, man-bun-wearing hipster that needs a truck to be "manly" (but typically can't change his own tire).

If you want a truck for towing/hauling/etc., you won't want the Limited.
If you want a truck for off-roading and the HO engine, buy a Raptor.
Otherwise, buy the Limited. You'll look uber-pimpin' cruising around the Whole Foods parking lot!

What does a Lariat owner use a truck for?

bobn 04-28-2019 02:23 PM

To me the main difference with going to a Limited is the engine. I test drove a Raptor, and I didn't think the engine was that much different.

To answer your question, I would say no.

Firedaniel 04-28-2019 03:25 PM

A 502A Lariat would save a chunk of change and have most everything the limited has. That’s what I did. Love if

Everyone feels their truck choice was the right choice .. News Flash... that's why you made that choice ... Ford has 7 F150's to choose from .. something for everybody .. enjoy your choice and stop telling others they made the wrong choice

Julian703 04-28-2019 09:15 PM

The stx is the best f150 for the money. Heated katzkin can be added for $1600. If you need all those options, hey its your money. Go right ahead and waste it. Lord knows Ive wasted enough, I own a damn boat. Ive owned some of the most luxurious vehicles and I dont miss the overpriced options. You can tell yourself you need this and that. You dont. Ever look at what compound interest in investments with an 8% return can do with 10k over a 10 year period? It turns it into $20,000. Something to think about.

a2pfunk 04-28-2019 09:56 PM

I got the Platinum and was a little disappointed that I didn't get the HO engine the Limited has. But then, like many above already pointed out, I realized that the Limited tows way less. The main reason I was upgrading from my '12 FX4 was because we tow a camper a lot in the summers. Sure, I don't need all 13,000# of the max possible, but I think it's weird that the most expensive truck with the "high output" motor tows significantly less.

But, they ARE cool!

elptxjc 04-29-2019 12:23 AM

At least the new Limited has something going for it, which is the engine. I drove a 2018 since there was no Platinum available, and I made it a very short test-drive because it rode like crap with the 22s (yes, tire pressures were fine). Wheels were awful looking IMO, no FX4 or max tow available (as stated), and the interior was to barf for. Even the new ones have a 'feminine' beige interior, but at least it's better than baby blue. Just for the lack of options stated, I wouldn't even consider one, but at least Ford kept all other trims, so there's more to choose from, which is fine with me. For me a fully-loaded Platinum in white/black was all I needed. I was offered a Limited at the same price of my Platinum and declined, but the new one is definitely more expensive due to the engine upgrade, and at least more unique.

13XLTEco 04-29-2019 12:49 AM

Who wants the FX4 package ? It's a waste.

Towing, hauling, generally doing "truck stuff"... but doing it with style. Pimpin' ain't easy, you know... that's why I drive a 502A.

That's your opinion which you are entitled to. However, the FX4 Pkg. is the only option which includes Skid Plates and Hill Descent Control and they are not available as standalone options.

Skid plates are available as a standalone option only on the XL 101A Pkg or for Fleet customers, unless you're looking at a Raptor which includes them as std. equipment

13XLTEco 04-29-2019 06:25 AM

Skid plates and hill descent are only good if you do serious offroading which most people do not do.

Hill Descent is only good for off roading ??

PARIAH 04-29-2019 08:29 AM

For me it's not worth it. Whatever you decide be sure to come back and give us your thoughts vs the Chevy.

MR G 04-29-2019 08:56 AM

Hill decent can be added for $40 and a few min on Forscan, the skid plates can also be added for a few hundred...

M3Master 04-29-2019 09:16 AM

Sure do appreciate all the input. As expected...quite the range of opinions.

I'm not a hipster..or a millennial....certainly don't mind getting my hands dirty. FWIW, I was under my '14 Shelby all weekend changing the clutch. I also have a 93 Cobra that I'm restoring myself. I can certainly see how that assumption could be made though.

In all reality...this won't be a work truck or see off-road. I have a 5-6 hr commute almost weekly to get my kids and I want something comfortable. I also want the ability to occasionally haul car parts...or landscaping stuff...car parts...whatever. Is the Limited overkill? No question. I did an extended test drive on a Platinum and was pleased with both the power and the ride.

The biggest driving factor for me is the Raptor motor. My wife LOVES the interior. The second reason is ultimately the one that carries the most weight.

Final note...the wheels. Not a fan either.

Thanks again.

DeltaNu1142 04-29-2019 09:47 AM

I bought a Platinum and immediately sold the 20" wheels and tires. Limited wheels will go even faster. I don't want to debate the usefulness of low-profile tires on a truck, but I'll say that, for me, meaty 18" rubber makes far more sense. In short, don't let the 22" wheels be a deciding factor. You can break even or maybe even make money getting whatever wheel/tire configuration you want in the aftermarket.

vulnox 04-29-2019 01:49 PM

Personal preference and all that. I think you should focus less on what the trim package name is, and more on what gets you what you want as far as features.

Despite the ramblings of one on this thread who says money is no object but says "mute point" instead of "moot point"... you should never buy anything, from a sandwich to a house, to try and have whatever is the most expensive. There are people in the world for which money is truly no object, and they often aren't spending that money frivolously, because that's how you become like any number of famous people who have major debt issues or are going to jail for tax evasion.

I got an XLT the first time around, and it has been great. Only thing I really was missing was auto climate control, push button start, and LED headlights. So I just put in an order for a 502A that will have all that plus a bit more. I could buy a Limited, most people here that are already spending $50k on a truck could spend the extra $10-15 to get a Limited, it isn't as big a unicorn as it seems to be made out to be.

But I despise the wheels, I despise chrome, and I can't get it in the color I want. It doesn't have the characteristics I want and my ego isn't set by what others think of my vehicle, so buying it would be a waste. But that is just my feeling, Hell our favorite Ford family vehicle was our 2014 Flex Limited. I know damn well the Flex isn't the ideal looking vehicle for most, I can't say I loved it (the looks that is), but it drove so well, had the 3.5L Ecoboost, AWD, more interior room than an Explorer, it is truly a hidden gem in Ford's lineup that people don't give a chance because of looks. But I guess that's the point, we bought something most don't care for but it worked great for us. I hope you do the same.

I think you should start with a Lariat and see if you can get the options you want there and if you like how it looks. The ride isn't any better as you go up trim, all the same cheap shocks (Raptor excluded). The Limited/Plat will have some nicer interior materials, but man, I have a hard time saying my XLT is uncomfortable, I imagine the Lariat will be even nicer.

Sit in them though, one will feel right, that's the one. Good luck!

I wanted a Limited and my wife did not like the applique in the rear or the interior. It was the tan and black, but depending on what way the sun was hitting it, it sometimes looked orange. I ended up buying a fully loaded Lariat, I just upgraded all the different parts I like from the "Limited" and have what I believe is the best of both worlds. I agree with one person said earlier, Ford has a variety of models, pick whats right for you. Lariat I think is a good entry point, there are a lot of trim upgrades once you get into the Platinum and up. The leather in the Lariat is quite cheap feeling compared to Plat, KR and Limited.

The extra cost is not a factor if you can buy a 2018 Limited leftover for this price and have an additional $3,500 Private Cash offer to throw on top of it. Of course your wife would need to like the Blue interior as well and it would work only if you plan to keep it for a while because of the 1 year depreciation factor affecting this particular one.

I have this exact truck. A few of my thoughts after 6+ months of ownership:

1. A friend of mine was giving me some crap for owning a Limited. He called it a "Cowboy Cadillac". His son owns a Lariat. I took him to lunch a week or so ago and he was riding in the truck looking around when he finally said "damn, this thing is really nice, a notable improvement over the Lariat"
2. The blue leather was originally not my favorite. When you step back and look at the choices of wood trim, the aluminum, the blue leather and the black trim and carpet - I actually really like the package.

I have to believe the the 2018 will probably depreciate faster than the 2019 because of the engine change.

In the end its about choice and fit to your life. I really like the truck and would recommend it.

- Doc

PS - toptobottom was the man and his "invoice only" thread was really helpful getting me a great price !

stop this.. you're making too much sense .. now you're going to make all the trim ego guys feel inadequate .. i mean one of the very people in this thread has talked down to me on my lowly XL to his mighty lariat .. he might lose his mind with this logic and sense you're making

I won’t say that an XLT is uncomfortable, but I will say that my Platinum is way more comfortable for me than a 502A Lariat that I test drove or even my dad’s 600A King Ranch. I was amazed at the difference actually, as I was set on a 502A until I drove the Platinum. Night and day difference IMO.

As you said, taking each model for an extended test drive is the best way to find the one that’s best for you. Happy shopping OP.

DrFunk 04-29-2019 08:24 PM

For the record my 2018 Limited has zero chrome on it - all the metal finishes are a satin aluminum finish, not chrome. Subtle difference but for me a very important distinction.

I am clearly in the minority in this thread but I really like the Limited 22" wheels

True that they can be a bit harsh on rough roads. But clean those 22" monster up and they look sweet !!

There aren't bad choices, just personal preferences.

For me, the best looking F150 is a Lariat Sport, best content for the $$$ is the Platinum, and overall nicest is the Limited.

I ended up with a Platinum and have de-chromed it. Not going to do much about the ugly rear applique due to cost, but the rest was relatively easy to fix with body color paint or black paint.

In a perfect world, I would want the Limited motor, Platinum interior, in a Lariat Sport 502a FX4 Screw. Getting the Platinum with a tune and removing the chrome was as close as I could come without major effort/expense.

I had a similar road as you.. my fav was the Lariat Sport with the Sport Appearance Package .. but i wanted fully black headlights with HID, bigger rims, full stereo system, leather, remote start and other small changes.. getting rid of the LED headlights would have been a waste of money, BO Play would have been a waste of money to then get rid of, custom leather is cheaper ...etc .. my top choice was the XLT 302a .. but my dealer didnt have any in black at the moment and showed me the STX .. it had more options than most dealer optioned XLT's and was a good starting platform for me... only thing i regret not having is the push button start.. but everything else has been upgraded better than OEM and its my own custom unique version with my own personal touches that i really like. MSRP on my truck was 49k and i've already put another 18k into it after i got it.

I seriously considered your approach as well!!! It actually was the full keyless thing that kept me from going with a 302a Sport. Coming from a 2013 Lincoln that had all of the features that a Platinum has, I wasn't willing to give up full keyless operation. Sad to me how high you have to go in the F150 line to get features that are standard in a Corolla.

lol maaaaaan .. nissan altima had push button start in 2006 .. i honestly didn't even know this until they showed me the truck and i was already commuted in my head.. sales girl handed me the keys and i was like.. what is this? are you serious? then i was like.. i guess its not so bad.. my prior 3 cars in my household are/were 2015 Audi S5, 2016 Range Rover Sport and 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee .. i'm ok with it so far.. the only thing that gets me is when i walk up to the truck and put my hand over the handle and open it thinking its unlocked .. that one still gets me

Good luck!

I started with an 16 XLT. Paid it off and after driving my wife's Explorer Sport, I wanted push start, LEDs, leather and ventilated seats, memory, and so on. I started with Lariats and ended up working on a 18 Limited. A Limited is definitely not a unicorn. It's damn near identical to a Platinum/KR. But why did i go with a Limited? Well it was only KR/Platinum/Limited in Blue Jeans on the lot and was only $2.5K more than any of the fully loaded Platinums. To me, the leather material feels different (Limited is nicer imo) and is a different color. The grille, polished vs chrome door handles, painted mirror caps, 22" wheels (although i took those off), etc made up for the extra $2.5K. I was solid on 3.5eb and 4x4 regardless of trim.

And anyone bashing you or whoever for getting a Limited, they're just peasants. Cause an XLT owner could say the same to a Lariat and so on. Get what you want, it's your money.

FordGate 04-30-2019 05:15 PM

King Ranch is for sure. But like some others, I am at a point in my life where I can afford to get what I want.

Sad to me how high you have to go in the F150 line to get features that are standard in a Corolla.

THIS! God damn THIS! I don't care if I sound like a a broken record, I will keep banging on this drum until I feel like stopping. The MBAs at Ford that concluded (I'm sure with lots of MBA speak and a snazzy lame PowerPoint slide) that it should cost nearly/more than $40K to have keyless operation deserve to be tarred & feathered and dragged out to the town square where the town constable goes through their entire internet browsing history projected on a big screen and forces any living grandmothers & mother to sit front row with clockwork Orange eye clamps on.

If you just jump from one Ford truck to the next, the absurdity of this is lost on you. Anyone, like me, who paid less than half a decade ago, enjoying keyless operation all these years, is utterly floored how A) Ford customers have put up with this and B) how Ford thinks it's a fantastic idea. There is no excuse, no one waste any breath about "uh well the market, you see..."... Nope. It deserves all the ridicule it gets, and then some.

Whew.... No, no I'm not mad. I swear it!

49k msrp on an STX? im not trying to talk down to you in anyway but that sounds crazy for a truck thats below an xlt. I know you said it was heavily optioned but that's over 65k canadian and my msrp on a 502a lariat is only 71k canadian.

Good luck with your decision.
Kudos to Tmcolegr for the factual reply.
You're mostly going to get a pile of opinionated self-justification that maybe you can glean a little information from.
When I love something I tend to forget the price.

I read a lot of these types of threads. Even though all the self-justification bores me, I suppose I'm a little guilty of it. I studied a lot in the 3 months prior to purchase and the 6 months since. The F-150 offers a crazy amount of choices. Happy to report that I'm fairly well convinced that I made the best possible choices/compromises for me given all the circumstances. My wife loves the truck. How do you put a price on that? Hope it works out the same for you.

Dan Church 05-01-2019 05:52 PM

i've got an '18 platinum 4x4 SC with 3.5 and 3.55 short bed. love it. i think all the comments on here are pretty good advice - comes down to preference so get what you want.

if you are in the lariat, platy, limited price range then you aren't too worried about an extra 10K. i went platy bc i wanted the 360 deg camera. but functionally i'd check the lim to make sure it'll do what you want - i pull a 9K horse trailer and run the freeway a lot for work plus some off roading. just make sure the rig hits the nail on the head funtionally and cosmetically the rest will fall into place. any of your choices are amazing rigs......

I've owned a '15, '16 and '17 Lariats and now own a '18 Platinum. Wanted a '19 Limited but couldn't justify the extra cost of the H.O. 3.5 and revised interior. My Platinum has about all the goodies it can hold and never had a single warranty claim on any of the last 4 F150s. FoMoCo cherishes their Limited a lot more than I do and that said tomorrow I'm going to pick a '19 RAM Limited. The Platinum has 12,5XX miles on it and the salesman has 3 guys wanting to look at it. Never had a Dodge or RAM in my and my last Chevrolet was an '82. If this pickup disappoints I'll try something different next year. So time for the RAM haters to come forth.

Cool! Please report back on how it holds up and compares. I was very close to buying a Ram this go around because the interior is infinitely nicer than ANY trim level F150. I was just scared of the whole Fiat/Chrysler/Dodge history. Make sure you get the 3.92 gears and some form of limited slip/locking rear. Tons of them on lots are missing a locking rear and that's just a disaster with a pick up.

Edited to add...I also test drove one with the 4 corner air ride. Wow! What a great riding truck!

My 2018 has been excellent. A couple of weeks ago I towed 8600 lb car carrier. No problems at all. Never got close to flooring it. Only performance mod is a AFE Air Intake.

I agree, best reply in thread. As one just diagnosed with a brain tumor, and just buying a Limited in January, life is short, go for it.

After a few days of driving I can say that in my opinion there is no way Ford's Limited is worth the 6K over the RAM Limited that I now own. And this coming from a die hard Ford driver. The two tone interior is simply gorgeous. Even the 22" tires were a surprise on our North Dakota roads where frost heaves are our version of highway speed bumps. Even a little better than the 20's on my Platinum. Maybe the air suspension helps the ride even with those low profile tires wit 40 psi. Had to settle for the 3.21 gear but it does have the limited slip. Out here in the sticks there are few Limiteds to be had. Closest dealer is 60 miles away and my dealer is 75 miles from the house. The cabin is quieter than the Platinum and the touch screen is going to take my 67 year old brain a while to master. Nothing against Ford's Limited but the owner is paying a lot for the H. O. 3.5. Drove a jillion pickups in the oil patch and they have come a long ways since my first company pickup in the 70's.

I really appreciate all the responses. We picked up the Limited on Saturday. I agree that the 7k price bump over the Platinum is a lot...but it was worth it to us so we took the plunge and didn't worry about it. Thanks again.

There is your answer. And I read through your thread and agree we have earned some pics. Post them up when you can!

ocwill1 05-21-2019 06:12 PM

I got the Platinum over the Limited because I did not like the lesser payload of the Limited. I got the Platinum over a similarly equipped Lariat 502 because of the massaging seats. They are a great feature on long road trips and drives after softball tournaments....

M3Master 05-21-2019 06:14 PM

Yea, I can certainly respect your reasons. Honestly, mine will be lucky to haul groceries...I simply like having a truck.

M3Master 05-21-2019 06:19 PM

Dirty, but here it is. I've got about 480 miles on it now and it's already been in service for 5 days. Lol. But, it was just a bad PCV valve...no big deal.

I always say read the instruction Manuel, but mine does not show the temperature in degrees as yours does, mine was made in December, is the temp in degrees an update, or did I miss how to get it to display, thanks. Mine is a twin, Ruby Red as yours is, love the truck.

sandhills 05-21-2019 06:56 PM

Mine is a grocery hauler too, plus I like the comfort over a low slung car on trips.

09stx 05-21-2019 06:56 PM

The digital temp would be a Forscan mod.

Yes. A simple Forscan mod...

I third that notion. I plan on getting a 5* tune for about $600 which will increase the hp and tq of my 3.5 close to that of the limited. Plus i think i have a little better payload.

But congrats on the truck, she's a looker.

ril850 05-22-2019 11:37 AM

I bought the tuner with 5 star with 91 ECO and 91 Performance tune. Really good results, I'm currently running the ECO tune, gas prices are up right now.

Mizzou.Mike 05-22-2019 11:59 AM

I went from a Lariat down to a 302a xlt. Not having a the LED headlights ended up being a deal breaker. those halogens are awful. I also missed the push button start and the 4a as well. I ended up trading for a Platinum in September and havent looked back. I just like the creature comforts too much these days being over 50 now.
