Side note....

I was climbing a damp dirt, slight incline, road in 4x4 high and the truck shoots forward with no wheel spin.

Just for fun I went back and did the same hill with the traction control "off". All four wheels spun with rooster tails.

The traction control must do a lot.

G80 is GM's code for a limited slip rear. GM rears are id'ed by ring gear size. 7.5", 7.625", 8.2" are whats in the cars. Of course the trucks gets larger rears

I should be off-roading this coming weekend and will do some 4x4 tests like we were talking about in the other threads.

Waiting on the outcome of that weekend!

In GM trucks (other than maybe the all wheel steering GMC a while back), people generally think of G80 as their automatic mechanical locking rear built by Eaton. It can be pretty stout in the 14 bolts semi and full floater rear ends, but crap in 10 bolts. I had one in my 2004 Z71 and it did pretty good off road once locked and at low speed. They are not great at all in rain or for pavement burnouts.

I think Ford has a superior offering with a select-able (and predictable) locker versus GM's automatic design.

I'm really impressed with the traction control in my F-150. It will let a good bit of spin and brake the wheel with less traction pretty good in a straight line. It seems once it detects any type of yaw, it pulls power to keep you out of trouble. In contrast, my wife's 2010 Accord just kills power at any detection of slip.

The coilovers I had ordered (which need to go on before my next off-road adventure) were damaged in shipping... New ones hopefully arrive on Monday and get installed next week! (Fingers crossed). Then I'll head out and do my "tests". Haha, can't wait. The delay with these coilovers is taking forever!

Coilovers ON and test COMPLETE! Four-wheel peel as we expected. Actually the four wheels driving forward was pretty instant. I didn't lock the rear, just 4HI and Traction Control on. Gave it gas in some deep sand and all four wheels started driving right away.

I took a video but not sure if you can upload videos here, and I don't use YouTube or anything like that, so the photo is a screenshot. You can see dirt flying from both front tires and the treads are still packed with dirt because I had just started moving at that point.

Good stuff.

What about sport mode with Advance Trac? Double tap the traction control button. How does it change the amount of slip allowed?
