Yea just cut stud too, it's not like that wall is load bearing I bet. Like he said only thing to consider is the electrical mainly. I've seen this done before, it's really not a big deal

If cutting the studs, he could box it with a thick header like they do for windows and doors....then he'd have about 4" with the Sheetrock.
