Default Grinding/rumbling noise on highway

I'm sure I came across a thread about this before, but I can't seem to find it. My pickup has a persistent noise at highway speeds, especially when driving against the wind, or when pulling a trailer. It sounds exactly like I'm driving on the rumble bar lines at the edge of the Interstate. At first I thought it was the road surface, tires, or just the wind. But it's not any of those things. Road surface doesn't affect the sound, and if something was vibrating that loud from the wind, it would have torn loose by now! I'm convinced that there is something amiss with either the transmission or the differential, or something else in the drive train. I'm taking it to Ford next week for diagnosis, but I am confident that they will not be able to reproduce the sound, or will brush it off as wind noise. This is something that has recently developed, even though my truck only has about 13,000 miles on it. So my question for the forum is, has anyone experienced this, and what ended up being the problem?

Ford will be performing the cam phaser firmware update recall when I take it in. Could the cam phaser issue be causing this noise? If so, will the update fix it? When I start the engine, there is often a single, light, clunk sound that I'm pretty sure hasn't always been there before. I'm wondering if any or all of these issues are related, and if the cam phasers have anything to do with any of this.

Just looking for advice, so when Ford tells me they can't hear anything, I have some direction I can point them.

Considering the weather is getting colder and the way you describe it, sounds like it could be as simple as a bad check valve or solenoid in the IWE vacuum system. If you switch to 4H and the rumble/vibration goes away, that's the direction I would look. Lot's of informative threads and posts here on it, especially from johnday in BFE.

Thanks for the mention TwinSpin.
aquifer, yes, first thing I'd try is throwing it in 4H/4A, as said, to see if it goes away. If it does, that narrows the problem down.
If it does turn out to be trouble with the IWE/vacuum system, the dealer will likely do TSB 20-2307. I know, seems like a hack, they should fix the problem instead of negating a feature the owner paid for.
Hard to think it could be a wheel bearing at this low of mileage, but that possibility exists
Just do a search for, TSB 20-2307

I had a similar noise about 6 months ago. It would happen around 60 mph and seemed to get louder if turning slightly left or right.

IWE check valve was replaced....no more noise. It's an inexpensive part that takes about 2 minutes to replace. Make sure you get the updated part. I believe Ford updated the part a few years ago.

Can this be an issue for a 2wd also? My truck recently started doing the same rumble noise around 50.

Check valve would only affect 4WD

It could be as far as a bearing, the rest is all for 4X4 equipped trucks.
