Is there an updated part even recent builds like mine could benefit from? My build date is Jun 04, 2018. For what little they cost, it'd be worth replacing proactively, even for newer trucks like mine. If not the latest, I'd like to replace mine too, since any grinding has to be detrimental to the gears.
Here's the new one;

I just ordered both the check valve assembly and solenoid for my 2015. I've had the grinding noise occur once for just a few seconds and haven't be able to replicate it... maybe it was a rock. Still, for the cost of those parts its piece of mind to have them on hand.

My post from another thread...
I have become my own expert with this system and fix - service and repair them all on my own now with little effort.
What I will say to everyone on here - especially those who say the grinding sound only happens when they are turning...
The vacuum lines are attached to the spindles with a snap fit hose clamp type bracket. This is the first thing everyone must check.
Both of my sides cracked right where they are secured to the spindle at this point. Make a turn, the cracks open up = vacuum loss = grinding sound or partial engagement.
You can go spend a ton of money replacing the hoses and changing out the IWEs or you can just cut the lines and splice in a couple of hose couplers which can be found for a few bucks and problem is solved.

Is the check valve hard to install? For less than 10 bucks I'll give it a go myself, if it's not too complicated.

My money is on the checkvalve as well. There's quite a few threads on here about the exact thing.
If your dealer can't replicate the sound, chances are you'll be driving out, the same way you came in. Stop at the parts counter before you leave, you'll need a YG360 valve.
Many guys are noticing it sometimes happens when the temps dip. I did as well.
It's the little round white thingy in the photo.
Hate to tell you to do a search, google is your best bet, since I assume you already did.
