Booked an appointment this Friday AM. Will let you know what's going on.
Sometimes with a hub on one side locked, the steering will feel funny as well. One of my Superdudes, before I picked it up, some butt breath locked the hub on the right side. Drove it 5 miles and right back to the dealer. I should have known the problem, one of my other 250's with the autolockers did the same thing every time a hub wouldn't unlock. Only had that truck about a year, due to other problems.

Yes please, let us know what's found, the more info, the more knowledge to help someone else.

Will do..

In fact, I'd rather currently have the hub locked than ''half'' engaged, grinding both the axle and hub's teeth.

I took a video this morning of my truck. I was cruising about 45-50 mph and everytime I slightly pushed the gas I could here this high pitched whistle/grinding sound . It’s almost like a heat shied rattle sound. Is this the same thing as a IWE problem? A little hard to hear in the video but it happens right at the beginning and then about every other second after that.

Agree, since the TC is in RWD mode, I don't think anything would be hurt.

Couldn't hear it in your video, but from your description, you're probably right. Get the noise going and throw it in 4X4, if it goes away, that's your problem.

Can't hear the sound in your video... But the grinding you hear is most likely the hub not fully engaging and rubbing on the axle's teeth.

It's very loud and disturbing. When you hear it, you know something's going wrong. Have you ever heard an old car braking with over worn brake pads and disc? It sounds just like that. Metal to metal friction.

I just happened to hear it last week because my window was down and the stereo sound was low. Between you and I, when it's -40F outside in winter and the heat is full blast + the sound of the stereo, you don't hear much outside, especially with the soundscreen windshield & the thick side windows. This said, I can't tell for how long this has been going on. Only the dealer will know, once he'll inspect the hub & axle.

To be honest, I'm a little disappointed by Ford so far. It's my first American vehicle and my experience is not really as...exciting as I was expecting. Hopefully the dealership will handle this in a timely matter.

In my opinion, nothing should be acceptable, even little noise when it's very cold outside. It's even worst in my case: the front driver wheel has traction even if it's on the 2x4... Makes me believe that the hub is engaged and stuck there.
By default the IWE system reverts to 4wd if it loses vacuum. It cannot engage one hub but not the other. Ford's IWE system is a joke. This same issue has been happening for more than a decade and they have yet to fix it. In anticipation of having this issue I ordered a couple of spares and keep one in the truck. Online the part is like $8 and less than a minute to replace.

So, based on what you're saying and since my issue is only from the front driver side wheel, it's most likely a bad hub or a vacuum leak in the hose near the wheel? The other front wheel seems just fine. No noise at all.

In other words, a bad check valve would cause failure to both front wheels simultaneously? If that's the case, then the locked hub on front driver side even when in 2A could only be caused by the hub itself that failed, correct? I guess it would also be possible that a faulty hub seal might have caused water infiltration that ended up freezing inside.

What do you think JohnDay?

Default IWE's are the worst on F-150's

I have a 2013 XLT Super Crew, 115,000 miles on it. Yes I drive a lot. My first grind was 2 years ago.. and it's been intermittent ever since. It's been doing it really badly this week. I've taken it to the shop 4 times and it will never grind when they have it. ever. The best part, it has done it for me 3 of the last 4 days.

Newest Grinding VIDEO:

I had a vacuum hose replaced 2 years ago. Ford claimed it had a tear in it. Fine. Seemed to fix the problem. I had one of the 4x4 actuators replaced about a year ago. I had a hub rebuilt 2 months ago. The sound keeps coming back. It's really frustrating that the mechanic can't diagnose a fix without it making the noise. The vacuum system is either leaking or its not? The solenoid is either broken or it's not? Rebuilding hubs isn't cheap. This seems to be a massive flaw in F-150's. When you flip it into 4x4 it stops, but you really should't drive 70mph on dry pavement in 4x4. I guess it's the luck of the draw. I've owned 3 F-150's and this is the only one that has done it. One mechanic at first blamed the leveling kit on it??? but that should have nothing to do with it.

My truck is being 'fixed' today.. a new 4x4 actuator is being put on. $160. I bet the noise comes back soon.

I'm open to suggestions. I love these F-150's,but this is so annoying it may be time to go to a different brand.

A lot are finding that replacing the check valve solves the issue. It is the cheapest part and one of the easiest parts in the system to replace.
