Very nice read for us engineers here . Thanks. Interesting to find out using sport mode (which I always use) only affects mileage by 0.1 MPG compared to normal. Nice. Now I also understand why my stupid truck was pinging like crazy with regular fuel at low throttle openings: maximum timing advance is from 1K to 2,750 rpm, and up to 30º. Decided to exclusively use premium from now on, to avoid the embarrassing noises and lack of power. Also interesting that highway fuel economy is 1 MPG better with premium, but almost the same at lower speeds, even though premium fuel has 3% less energy. Thanks again man.

I didn't realize that bottom grill for the intercooler also has shutters? Seems like it wouldn't be very smart to block that opening with anything. Seen 3.5's with fog lights etc blocking that shutter opening. Wonder how much that could effect that engine?

Anyway more facts and figures then I could ever absorb but it was an interesting read......... thanks...

Yep, been there from 15 on. That's one way Ford controls the intercooler condensation issue that plagued the 11-14s.

As a non-engineer type, and I’m fairly certain I’m in the majority here, it would be greatly appreciated if one of you engineer types might be able to condense this down and give us the highlights and major info as you understand it.

Thanks for that info! Had a 2012 and never noticed them because they weren't there... I would guess it's a prudent thing to keep that opening... open for air flow?

I love my Gen 2 3.5 but never had any issues with the older version either.........

This lower grille shudder....makes me wonder if I should remove the front ID plate

Not mandatory in several states, this plate blocks a large portion of the lower shutter frontal area.

Did anyone else find it odd they did a test with total vehicle weight of 10,000lbs, blowing right thru the GVWR?

That is crazy. I probably missed it, but did they say how they added the 4,750 lbs? That's close to stacking another F150 on top of the F150!
