But, another tuner I've ran across that has some pretty impressive numbers is the Hypertech Max Energy tuner. No one seems to mention them on this site so I am curious to see if anyone out there runs one and how do they like it? Specifically for the Ecoboost's engines. At only $300, I'm wondering how good of a deal is it really. Their dyno runs were done on an identical truck to mine which also intrigues me.

This is everything the Hypertech Max Energy tuner does/claims:

  • 91 Octane: +66HP / +78TQ
  • 89 Octane: +66HP / +68TQ

  • 2-3 Shift Point -500 to +500 RPM
  • 3-4 Shift Point -500 to +500 RPM

  • 5-6 Shift Point -500 to +500 RPM
  • Shift Firmness: Selectable Stock, Tow, Street, Sport, or Performance
  • Shift Response: Selectable Hyper-Mileage, Mileage, Stock, Tow, Street, Sport, Performance, or Track
  • Speedometer\Odometer Correction
  • Speedometer\Odometer Correction For Tire Sizes 24-54 inches 1/4 inch increments

I purchased the Hypertech 2.0 unit for my 2018 F150 3.5l ECOBOOST
It seemed to offer very mild improvements with the 93 octane calibration
I had previously purchased the 5* N-Gauge tuner for my 2018 Expedition with 89,91 & 93 octane calibrations
There was a huge difference (have the 93 octane installed) between it & the Hypertech unit
The Hypertech had a 30 day money back guarantee so I returned it for credit & went to 5*
Got the SCT X4 unit from 5* with the 91, 93, E30, E50 tunes with it for the F150 (Was about $450.00 with my military discount)
Loaded the E30 calibration with a 50-50 mix of 91 octane premium & E85 in the 36 gallon fuel tank
Performance difference is phenomenal
Vastly better

Thanks Mike for the real world review. It worries me that you can hardly find any reviews from ecoboost owners with Hypertech tunes so I'm going to stay away from them for now.

They call that a "clue". I think you've made a great decision. If you aren't looking to do anything ludicrous, 5* is hard to beat.

Well I've got a used SCT on the way thanks to a Forum member. Now I am struggling to decide between 5Star or MPT tunes. I know MPT beats 5Star in customer service and I like the fact that MPT has been testing Ecoboost's for years (had their own Ecoboost that they made crazy numbers with plus alot of aftermarket performance parts). But I know MPT is more aggressive than 5Star and 5Star might be better as a daily driver. So I am on the fence but need to decide quickly as both have email tunes on sale this weekend.

5* has an Ecoboost or two in their stable as well, if memory serves. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

Very happy with my 5* tunes
I don't think MPT has tunes for E30 & E50
E30 tune in my 2018 F150 makes crazy hp
So it is your choice to make
Never had any customer service issues with 5* personally & they offer a discount for veterans
Think there is a charge to unlock a used SCT X4 so it can be used on another vehicle but i am not sure
Would be a good idea to check
Best of luck with whatever programmer you choose

Thanks. Even though it’s used he returned his truck back to stock which unlocks the tuner.

I'm considering the Hypertech tuner because I don't really want to mess with datalogging and waiting on custom tunes. I want to be able to re-calibrate for increase tire size and get a little spunk back in a simple package. I've had a Hypertech on a previous vehicle and it worked well. I might give it a shot. Their dyno results are good enough for me.

I ended up going the custom tune route but keep us posted. I'm interested to see real world reviews of the hypertech.

Yeah, I looked into the custom stuff and I know it will yield better dyno numbers but for the price ($350) and simplicity of the canned tunes (which I believe the Hypertech gives like 5 tunes and everyone else only gives 2-3) it might be a good alternative for someone like myself. Definitely a more cost effective way to get some scoot back than re-gearing.
