How to: Swap for OEM LED Taillights

Default How to: Swap for OEM LED Taillights

Not a major job at all guys. Here's the run down:

You will need:
- (2) Motorcraft WPT-1279 Wiring Pigtails
- LH LED Taillight Assy. I used FL3Z-13404-F w/Blis
- RH LED Taillight Assy. I used FL3Z-13405-F w/Blis.
- (2) Sylvania LED Load Resistors (Just buy Qty 1. Comes 2 in a box.) http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/s...m=sylvania+led
- Misc wiring supplies/fabric tape/screws
- 12x12 piece of plexi-glass (or similar) and some silicone to make a door to cover BLIS module hole as the light does NOT come with the BLIS module.

So here's what you do:

Passenger side - Remove taillight. (2) 8 mm bolts, pull the light towards the back of the truck to remove from clips. Your stock light will have 5 wires going to it. See the attached pics of the pinout of the new 16 terminal connector. Note on the right side, you will only use (6) of those wires.

First, install the led load resistor. Tap (dont cut, just tap into) one wire on the led load resistor into the black/yellow wire that goes to the upper turn/park socket. Tap the other wire on the led load resistor to the green/orange wire on the upper turn/park socket. I just screwed (with aluminum screws) the load resistor behind the taillight.

Backup light has a black/yellow and a green/grey wire. Turn/park light has a black/yellow, green/orange and a blue/grey wire. Tie both of the black and yellow wires to pins 1, 8 and 9 on the new 16 pin connector. Tie the green/grey backup wire to pin 4 on the new 16 pin connector. Tie green/orange to pin 2 on the new 16 pin connector. Tie blue/grey to pin 3 on the new 16 pin connector. Either cut off the extra wires, or remove the terminals and wires from the connectors. (PITA) Tape it all up with fabric tape, done.

Measure you out the hole on the back of the taillight, have Lowes/HD cut some plexi for you, silicone it on the taillight and screw it into the holes for the BLIS module to mount. That'll keep it waterproof.

My thoughts:

They look MUCH MUCH better. Amazing how bright both the LED ring and the brake light are. The brake light is insanely bright. I already had the Sylvania LED bulbs installed in my brake lights, I'd say the OEM brake light is 20x brighter.

Don't be scared. No special programming or anything like that needed. NO HYPERFLASH using the linked resistors.

I bought my lights from Tasca - they were the cheapest. They had to order them and shipped them out the next day. The connectors came from Rockauto.

Nice.....you can get oem led tail lights without blis, maybe its something new for 2016 not sure.

I don't know about 16, however the 15s without BLIS have an MSRP of $800 + a $50 core charge!! What was more than I was willing to spend on them. Surprisingly, the BLIS ones don't have a core charge on them. Dunno why.

Lights were $265 ea, connectors $22 ea, load resistors $16, figure $35 misc/plexi. All in about $625. I also did an OEM LED third for $75. So that was $700 total.

Minus $185 for my old lights = Total net cost of $515.00.

Smile on my face when I see my LED taillights = priceless.
