How to Improve for Towing
#21
"so the bikes can come as 1010+110=1120 leaving us 70 lbs left on payload... sorry parker puppy( 85 lb golden) you cant come with us.
keep in mind this is with a small pop up trailer, many of us have Tongue weights that are greater than 500 lbs"
ROFL I highly doubt 15 lbs is going to matter. Maybe if everyone evacuates their bowels before entering the truck, you'll get that down to under payload.
I get the payload thing. However, to think that AT the payload # the truck fails is ludicrous. Would I go 1000 lbs over payload? No. Would I go a couple of hundred over? Absolutely.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the hitch. You'll want a good weight-distributing hitch, configured correctly.

I've already got that covered. Even though I was previously towing with way more truck than necessary, I had an Equal-i-zer sway control and weight distributing hitch on it. I really like it.

I have an equalizer as well and I took the time to properly set it up myself. It's the best money I've spent to improve towing my travel trailer!

Agreed. I wish the tow mirrors were part of max tow like they used to be. I don't think anyone would care about an extra few hundred bucks added to this pkg. Not sure why the 6.5' bed is so limited either. It's almost impossible to find in Texas, or if you find one it doesn't have max tow.
Actually, I can see, a little, how not everyone wants camper mirrors with max tow, but I simply do not understand max tow not including HDPP. Saying these trucks will tow 12,000# is as close a lie as the truth can be.

F150 Not Good With Some Trailers Without Mods
I use BFG AT K02's for tires. Better tire will improve the towing experience. Stock tire isn't much more than a passenger tire. Ford should be ashamed of themselves for putting this tire on a truck for towing. I have the 3.5 F150. I may still add some shocks and air bags or active suspension.
3.5 and 10 speed actually felt like it pulled (power wise) better than the 250 diesel I test drove.
Towing experience with large trailers is not enjoyable with stock options.
These trucks can pull the weight but are terrible to tow anything larger than a small cargo trailer or low height trailer. Weight is not the problem. Sway drags these all over the place. Without good tires the tires will roll with the sway and cause computer errors when it tries to automatically adjust. Ive seen the steering warnings from the computer on windy days.
I'm still working on mine to improve towing but tires alone allowed me to increase towing speeds from 40 to 70mph without white knuckling it.

It had came over from Baton Rouge, LA in a trade so we lucked out on finding it.
