Everyone probably knows this, but you don't have to hold the key in the "starter" position to start the truck. Just flick it to the start position and let go and the truck completes the start... yin yin yin varoom.

Default Never do this . . .

I would never do the coast thing, but I do drop er into neutral (pretty often) when approaching a stop sign or red signal. You'll find you stop WAY quicker and save brakes.
Like the man said, you have to make a complete stop.
Don't move the selector until you have your foot ON the brake.

I've done this consistently on two vehicles for 200k miles without issue.

I did it again today same place I always do it. On the way to cottage there is a 70mph expressway spur that ends in a 35 mph slight down hill left curve. Just about never any other traffic on it.. My game is to time it just right where I slip it into netural at the perfect spot to coast the 1/4 mile or so to enter the curve at the correct speed..
I must say that the 2002 coasted a lot further than this big box does. And that was with leaving it in drive and just turning the CC off. The 2015 seems to have a lot of engine braking when I don't want it. Even notice this when coming up to a red light that I'm trying to time for it to go green.

Opening the tailgate has been proven to do nothing for gas mileage and is illegal in some states if you have no load in the bed requiring it to be open.
