High end drive through car wash or hand wash?
#21
I remember the old car washs that appeared to have nylon 'weed wacker' string for brushes!!! YEEEEEEEEEOWSA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thankfully, car washes have a come a long way since then!!!
Here's the one I use:
https://www.buc-ees.com/katycarwash.php
I can't say that I've ever seen it not 'fully loaded/in use 100%' at any time that I've ever been there,,, Not uncommon to have 30 - 40 vehicles waiting in line (Goes quicker than one would think)
I have a 36 gallon tank,,, They knock 20 cents a gallon off gas if you get the top of the line 'Works' car wash. ($16.00) So, I just fill er up and wash er down, all at the same time
100 gas pumps at this location (+ additional diesel pumps) One of the bigger 'Buc-cees',,,
Interesting factoid to help one grasp the scale of how much money runs through a place like this. The 50,000-square-foot, 100-pump mega-center is expected to bring about $25 million annually in sales tax to the city of Katy., Like many places, we have a combined sales tax. The sales tax rate for the City of Katy is (1) one percent,,,,, Lets see, if 25 mil = 1 percent,,,, OLE CHIT!!!!

My 2018 says that. In the "quick reference" guide:
For gasoline vehicles, use only UNLEADED fuel with a minimum octane
rating of 87. Do not use fuel containing more than 15% ethanol, E85 fuel,
diesel fuel, fuel-methanol, leaded fuel or any other fuel because it could
damage or impair the emission control system.
To provide improved performance, we recommend premium fuel for severe
duty usage, such as when driving off road or towing a trailer.
And, in the owner's manual itself:rating of 87.
Your vehicle is designed to operate on
regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum
pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87 or
regular unleaded gasoline blended with a
maximum of 85% ethanol (E85).
Some fuel stations, particularly those in
high altitude areas, offer fuels posted as
regular unleaded gasoline with an octane
rating below 87. We do not recommend
these fuels.
For best overall vehicle and engine
performance, premium fuel with an octane
rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The
performance gained by using premium fuel
is most noticeable in hot weather as well
as other conditions, for example when
towing a trailer. See Towing (page 279).]
So, they're pretty clear that it's for "improved performance". Quite a few dyno runs and 0-60 tests on Ecoboosts of numerous flavors showing a clear (and often substantial) improvement running 93 compared to 87.

In my truck yes. 1 to 1.5 MPG. One tank is not enough to see increase. After four tanks, looking at results one can see increase. BUT, premium in my area is 40 cents a gallon higher than reg. This raise per gallon also raises cost per mile. Not much, but enough that I just run 87. I have over 34,000 miles on my truck, and have run this test twice.

I use a drive thru with leadfoot gray paint. Probably 40 washes so far and no swirls. It's a newer drive thru.
My advice is be picky about where you take it and checkout the cleaning equipment.
I pay a flat rate of $20 per month with unlimited washes.
I don't take the antenna off or anything.

Like to wash monthly, generally hand wash 3 to 5 times a year. Due to time or weather don't always want to invest the time, so use brushless washes in between so it doesn't get too gunked up. Not the best but better than nothing and no concerns on damage, generally run $10 a wash. Also living in the pacific northwest not much interest hand washing November thriugh March. Selfishly nice to see some gas prices higher than what we see here around Seattle. 🤑
