According to these pictures above, what makes the 4WD truck higher in the front end?
Different length of springs..

The height difference between the two is

1. Tires- 32" vs 30.5" (which gives an additional .75")
2. Rear block which is 1.25" or 1.5" I can't remember

So that gives a difference of 2.25"ish which looks to be about what the picture shows. Front coil overs may be different too although I don't know if anyone has confirmed it or not.

I believe the FX4 front struts are slightly longer overall by about an inch. Here's a pic from stage 3 motorsports showing a 2wd strut (right) and the FX4 strut (left).

Or we could ask Ford for the actual dimensions, 6th line down. Or is that too easy?

It's pretty close to 3" all around. Partly due to the tire difference.

I understand the front has to be higher due to the drive components.

They drive like two completely different vehicles. The 2WD feels much, much lighter (~254 lbs. according to Ford) and you can really feel it in the steering. The 2WD feels very "Mustangish" if you get my drift. Rear end will kick out very easily compared to the 4WD.

The 4WD has a much, much firmer ride. Steers slower and doesn't lean as quick. There feels like a major difference in the spring tension. The 4WD (to me) has a better ride but it feels like your driving a larger (F250ish) truck.

The tires (I'm pretty sure) effect this story too.

I posted this as I see the question come up quite often with guys truck shopping.

You really need to drive both to decide for yourself. There is a difference.

Default Hello all

Hello and I apologize for asking for some information for a different purpose....not trying to hijack the thread!

I will be buying a 2017 Lariat 4x this winter. I live in AK so 2wd is not an option. If living anywhere south of the northern CONUS states I would definitely be buying a 2wd; I prefer the ride height over the 4wd.

I intend to remove the rear blocks, and I want to lower the front to as close as 2wd height as I can. I believe there is a physical difference in the lower control arm mounting between the two frames, and I thought I read on this forum that the factory strut part numbers were the same between the 2 and 4wd models, that it was the control arm distance from the frame that accounted for all of the front end height differences. This is the first that I am seeing that the struts may contribute as well. I'd love to be able to install 2wd struts on the 4wd and accomplish a bit of lowering. Can anyone tell me for sure if the 2 and 4wd models have a different part number, and overall length strut? Also, can a 4wd accept a 2wd strut without negative effects (other than appearance)?

Thanks in advance.
