Default FX4 - is 3.31 the right axle for me?

The FX4 package comes standard with 3.31. 80% of my driving will be highway/city. 10% will be towing a 4000 lb boat. 10% will be hunting off road. I read somewhere the 3.55 is the best all-around axle for the F150. Should I order that instead of the 3.31?

Thanks for the quick reply! What do you think about going up to the 3.73? Is that too much?

realistically you probably will not be able to tell a huge difference between the 2

I’ve had a 5.0 with both 3.55 and 3.73. I much prefer the 3.73. Immaterial difference in highway MPG but it accelerates better and holds gears better on hills.

I would have gone 3.73, but it wasn't an option on my truck. With my 3.55s and the 10-speed, I'm not even at 2000RPM until 80-something MPH.

3.73 also gives you flexibility to add slightly larger tires without ruining your effective gearing.

You beat me to it. Ha ha. Yeah, I have permanently locked out 10th gear (and 9th most of the time too), since it just lugs the engine and wastes more gas. So 3.73 would have been perfect, at least for me. I'd feel a lot better if it wasn't available for my Platinum MaxTow too; was it? But had to buy a lot truck, and none had 3.73. But no way I'd have bought 3.31.

If you are ordering as others have said by all means go with the 3.73 you will never regret it. I had a 5.0 with 3.55s and 3.73s and much prefer the 3.73s as well. If you are trying to find a lot truck the 3.55s are out there it was almost impossible to find 3.73s when I was shopping.

3.73 if you can.

3.55 if you have to.

3.31 keep searching.

I have a FX4 3.31 and have no problems with it. For everything you described on your driving, the 3.31 will be perfectly fine. If you plan on lifting and putting bigger wheels on it, then I would say a 3.73. If you have found or find a truck you really like with the 3.31, I wouldn't let it dissuade you from getting it.
